Hi, I have the HP460-a060na pc and a HP monitor. I now need to add a second monitor but when I do this both monitor's pick up the same things and the second monitor is not being detected. I have used an adaptor for the monitor's not sure what I am doing wrong. Thanks

That model has a VGA output for the monitor. It also has a HDMI port. I assume the monitor is connected to the VGA. " I have used an adaptor for the monitor" what is this adapter and how is the second monitor connected?

If they are both attached to the VGA output, then that is why the symptoms are as stated. The "adapter" most likely is a splitter which will do exactly as you describe. The second monitor needs to be connect either using the HDMI port or an adapter similar to this:
