HP S2031 Monitor
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Monitor sudddenly stopped  working with my HP desktop.  Monitor status stuck on DVI input source and I use VGA. However, monitor will work with same VGA cable when plugged into my laptop VGA port. I went into monitor settings and tried to save VGA as  source but "Save and Return" option was grayed out. When I  take the same cable and plug back into desktop the monitor won't work and again show DVI as input source. Says check video cable. Stranger still is that the desktop WILL work when plugged into a DIFFERENT monitor with the SAME VGA cable. Why are the two HP items not talking to each other? I see that both the desktop and monitor are working but just not with each other.

Greetings @wmfitz

Welcome to HP Forums and Thanks for the post.

I understand that your monitor is not responding with your desktop.

Don't worry, I will be glad to help.

Kudos to you for trying to troubleshoot the issue on your own and describing the issue in such good detail.

Have you tried to connect any other monitor to your desktop?

Recommend you to try a different monitor on the same port on the desktop to check if the issue is with the video port on your desktop.

If the other monitor works fine on the same port, recommend you install HP my display on your computer to manage displays. Click here

Keep me posted.

Thanks Chimney_83,

Yes, I have used a VGA cable from my desktop computers to 2 other monitors and was able to get display. So it appears that both the monitor and tower are working but somehow not with each other.

One more thing that might (?) shed light on this weird problem. I thought I may have had a virus that was slowing down my computer. I ran several anti-virus/malware programs but suspected that it may have picked up that nasty Auleron virus. I then downloaded from Microsoft.com  the Microsoft Security Essential package because I was told it would detect any Auleron virus.  The program started to scan my harddrive . I walked away figuring it would take a while. When I came back

I could not get the monitor to wake up and kept getting the error message about no signal input and to check video cable.

I will try installing the HP My Display to my computer. What is that program and what should I do with it? And do you know why the Save/Return function is grayed out on my monitor settings when I try to save VGA source input?

Thank you

Thanks for the reply and trying so many steps on your own.

Recommend you perform a push button reset on your computer without loss of data to refresh the drivers and settings.

Please refer to this article for assistance.

Let me know how it goes.
