OMEN by HP Obelisk Desktop 875-0084
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Hi I was thinking about upgrading my graphics card. Currently I have the Nvidia GeForce 2070 Super that came with the pre-built PC. I want to upgrade to the Nvidia GeForce 4070 Ti, but I don't know if it's too much for my PC.

@Bri7945,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

I have good news for you!

Your OMEN by HP Obelisk Desktop PC - 875-0084 (4NN70AA), according to: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06447686, was fitted with a 750-watt power supply (please verify), and an Edoras (SSID: 84FD) motherboard.

A Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, which has a 285-watt TDP/TGP, requires a 700-watt minimum PSU. Some sources even claim that 600 watt is sufficient: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-rtx-4070-ti.c3950.

Point is, as long as you watch the GPU's dimensions (LxWxH) for fit inside your case, you are A-OK to go, as seen here, for example: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/58517028.

[EDIT:] Please be aware that you'll probably need a triple 8-pin PCIe to 16-pin PCIe power adapter cable, such as this one: Fasgear PCI-e 5.0 Extension Cable 30cm/1ft 16 Pin(12+4) Male to PCIE 3x8Pin(6+2) Female Sleeved Exte..., and as @Bill_To helpfully pointed out, may very well be included with an RTX 4070 Ti purchase.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,

Hi

Two items to check before upgrading are:

1. You have a 750 watt PSU. The 4070 Ti needs two eight pin connections. Check this. I am sure you have the connectors required.

2. Will this card fit in the case? The length, width, and slot dimensions depend on the card manufacturer. The higher tiered 4000 series cards use a 16 pin PCIe power adapter to connect to the card. Check this item when selecting a graphics card OEM. This adapter cable should not be bent to the extreme. You might have a problem with the side glass panel and the16 pin adapter/cable if the other card dimensions work with your case.

@Bri7945,

Please see my first -edited- link for the correct (triple) PCIe 8-pin to PCIe 16-pin power adapter cable as designed for an RTX 4070 Ti.

Hi

The Nvidia specs for a typical 4070 TI shows a 285 watt power draw requiring two 8 pin PCIe connectors.

That would yield 150 watts per each PCIe cable and 75 watts on the PCIe x16 slot.

Are you sure about three 8 pin PCIe connectors? II guess some graphics card OEMs might do this.

I would think there must be 4070 Ti products only requiring two 8 pin PCIe connectors.

I am running a 300 watt 2080 on two dedicated (not pigtailed) 8 pin connections.

Hi

Disregard my previous post. I think I misunderstood your three pin adapter comment.

Hopefully the OEM provides an adapter in the box.

Only two dedicated 8 pin connections will be required to run the card.

@Bill_To,

You posted a very meaningful contribution to this discussion thread: even though this illustration doesn't recommend using just two separate PCIe power rails, in case of the RTX 4080 Ti with a stated 285-watt TDP/TGP power demand, 2 x 150-watt (2 x 8-pin PCIe) power cables should suffice for this graphics card, and -in my opinion, the red bar should read: "Not Recommended if TDP >300 watt":
