- OJ Pro borderless half letter?

I bought the OJ Pro 6978 because the specs say "borderless up to 8.5x11". This appears to be incorrect -- in fact only a few specific sizes seem to be allowed -- but I haven't been able to get HP support to say "no, you can't do that" so that I can then say "I have to return it because it does not meet specs".
I need to print on 8.5x5.5" cardstock, borderless. I've been doing this for about ten years on a HP Photosmart D5460. I thought I'd upgrade to a newer, potentially more reliable printer and take advantage of Instant Ink at the same time. (The printed pieces are folded in half and become Christmas cards with designs based on my late wife's art.)
The HP software for the 6978 comes with a "statement" form predefined in this size. I also created a "half letter" custom form. When I select either one, the Borderless option breaks out like chicken pox with a yellow triangle. Conversely, with Borderless set, both of these paper sizes have the yellow triangle. If I proceed anyway, I get the dialog box about "let me fix it or I won't let you continue", so it's impossible to even test what the printer would do with this combination of settings.
I spent 3-1/2 hours on the phone with HP support, getting nowhere. The first CSR spent 2-1/2 hours trying several other drivers, which I could have done in about ten minutes if asked. A promised call-back did not happen. The second CSR appeared to be a trainee despite claiming to be doing "advanced diagnostics", as about once a minute she put me on hold to check with her supervisor, taking several minutes each time. I was relieved when the call dropped. No one attempted to call me back.
I've also exchanged perhaps 15 messages on the Twitter channel. What a bizarre way to do support ... the results have been identical -- no progress -- though a lot less annoying because I can do what they ask and reply in a few seconds instead of waiting what seems like hours.
So that's the background. Will the 6978 print on my cards, or do I need to return it? And if it cannot print on my cards, is there a current printer which will? (I think I like the Instant Ink program, but I'll switch brands in a second if HP has abandoned my needs and another has what I need.)

Hi,
Thanks for using the HP Forums.
The HP Drivers would flag if the parameters are not met for the print settings.
Have you tried selecting Photo and "Normal print mode" while using your media to print?
The idea of the workaround here is to just use the settings that the driver accepts while using the media that you want to use,
A word of caution here is that the Print quality may not be the optimal but at least you can get to print and decide for yourself if that setting is acceptable.
Also, you may need to adjust the images and text while using this workaround to ensure evrything is in alignment, hence would suggest that you use normal paper (cut to the size you want) and test print first.
Hope that helps!

I can print on my media if I don't try to print borderless.
I can print borderless on other media.
Neither is what I want to do.
I expect to have to adjust print settings. I'm printing from Adobe Illustrator, so there are plenty of possible adjustments. And the cards I'm printing on are just cards, not photo paper, so I don't expect (or need) photo quality.

Hi @paleolith
We're suggesting that you select Photo paper (even though your media is not).
Photo paper is one print settings that allow borderless print. If the print quality is acceptable, then continue using that workaround.
Thanks,

Thanks.
When I select Photo Paper and Borderless, my media size is disallowed.
More generally, when Borderless is on, the allowed Media are
HP Photo Papers
HP Matte Brochure or Professional Paper
HP Glossy Brochure or Professional Paper
Other Photo Inkjet Papers
Other Glossy Inkjet Papers
Inkjet Hagaki
When I then (with Borderless on) pick any of these, my media size (either as "Statement" or as "half letter") is disallowed.
When I turn off Borderless, the other Media are allowed, those being:
Plain Paper
HP Matte Presentation Paper
Other Matte Inkjet Papers
Plain Paper, Thick
Plain Paper, Light/Recycled
and then my "half letter" media size is allowed -- in fact, all media sizes are allowed. (I did not check every combination, but in the ones I checked, all media sizes are allowed.)
But then, having selected "half letter" media with Borderless off, Borderless On is disallowed.
