The same thing just happened to me & I found the problem within a couple minutes by exploring. I'm using Windows 7.
- Go to the 'Start' menu
- Select 'Devices and Printers'
- Double Click on your printer
- Click the link on the top right that says 'Printer: Offline'
- Click on 'Printer' at the top left
- Go down and uncheck 'use printer offline'
This worked for me.. I thought I was gonna have to do a system restore or something more complicated if that didn't work... definitely don't wanna buy another printer over a technical glitch! Hope this solves your problem!

@GalacticCanibal, sorry that you are having this issue with the printer being offline.
You can try to run the print and scan doctor and it may fix the issue. Here is a link to it.

@ enewton:
I've been wracking my brain as to why I could not connect my HP Photosmart Printer to my new HP Touch Smart computer. I followed your advice and viola! It worked... although the new Windows has me going bananas... Thanks.
