Hello,
I see there are a lot of threads about changing the default print settings for hp printers in Lion, but my question is a little different. I have a network running on a Netgear N600 wireless router, and my HP Officejet 6500 is directly connected to it via USB. I want to set up the printer so that anyone who connects to the wireless network via a mac has the following default print settings in any application:
- Quality: Fastdraft
- Color: Grayscale
- Black ink cartridge only
- Two-side printing: long-edge binding
When I go to the printer's page by entering the IP address in my browser, the administration utilities don't allow me to change the default settings, and changing the default settings in CUPS is useless since applications like Safari, Word, and Preview override those settings.
Is what I want possible?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
The print settings can only be configured through the printer driver, therefore you will need to set the desired settings for any computer.
After changing the printer settings, click the Preset menu and click Save current settings as a Preset, then the settings will remain sticky till any other preset will be used.
Additionally I would recommend you to connect the printer to the router as a network device.
Connecting the printer as a USB will only provide you print functionality and you will not be able to use any other functionality as scan / digital fax.

Shlomi

Thank you for the prompt reply. Let me interpret it so that I'm sure I understand it clearly:
I want to set up the printer so that if a visitor to my home brings a laptop, connects to my network, and prints to my printer, the document they print will automatically print in grayscale, fast draft quality, using two-sided printing.
What you're saying is that that isn't possible. I will have to ask my visitor to select grayscale, fast draft, two-sided printing, and then show them how to do that if they don't know how. There is no way automatically prevent them from printing in color the first time they print to my printer unless I prevent guests from printing altogether.
Is that correct?
Thank you in advance.

You are gladly welcome.
That is correct indeed. when printing from a computer any print settings can only be configured from the computer.
The device will only allow us to change this type of settings for stend alone jobs performed from teh device (e.g. Copy or Printing from the device using a memory card).
Some commercial models may provide such features to force specific print settings, however I affraid such capabilities are not provided for consumer products.

Shlomi
