Have a Envy 15.6inch laptop operating on Windows 10 and have just fitted a monitor Pavilion 27 xw, they are connected by an HDMI lead as included with monitor
If there is sound being broadcast when i connect the HDMI lead it continues to broadcast through the speakers on the laptop but if it stops then it does not re-start to broadcast while connected. If I disconnect the monitor then the sounds do broadcast through the laptop.
How do I get round this problem?

Jimmy, welcome to the forum.
You should connect the monitor to the laptop and go into the Control Panel / Sound. There you should assure that the speakers for the monitor are set as Default. If you don't use the monitor all of the time, you may have to do this each time that you connect it.
