HP Spectre 13v001TU
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Internal speakers make a loud hissing / static noise. The noise occurs in 5 second intervals. It starts as soon as the laptop switches on; in the BIOS (Insyde F.30) it is audible. In the OS it persists for about 5 minutes and then stops. Thereafter I have no sound. Everything works fine if I have headphones \ earphones plugged in. I have a dual boot Windows 10 + Ubuntu (the same thing happens in Ubuntu).

Welcome to HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.

I understand that you have an HP Spectre 13-v001tu laptop and it's internal speakers produce a loud hissing/static noise. This noise occurs in 5 seconds interval. The issue persists in BIOS too. In Windows, there is audio for the first 5 munites (with this hissing/static) and then there is no audio post 5 minutes. The audio output is fine through headphones/earphones. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job. You've done a remarkable job performing the steps.

I would like to know the following information to assist you better:

  • Have you checked the sound with external speakers (if available)?

Looks like this is an issue with the internal speakers and not with the sound card because the audio is fine through headphones/earphones. However, before we come to a final conclusion, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Disconnected AC adapter from the laptop.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the AC adapter.
  • Power ON the laptop.

Please perform the steps as described in detail from this link

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to let me know what happens. All the best! 🙂

Firstly, thank you for your speedy response. I'd really like to commend you (and HP at large) for the support.

Okay :

1. I tried an external speaker and the audio output is perfect. No hissing from the laptop. The sound resumes again as soon as I disconnect the external speaker.

2. I hard reset the laptop (power button held 15 seconds) and there was no change.

3. The audio playback on the HP diagnostic test failed with the following read out.

FAILURE ID :
GLH02J-85Q8KC-XD7X6J-21A803

PRODUCT ID :
W0J14PA#ABG

Left channel, Right Channel.

4. I reset the BIOS settings to default. There was no change.

5. I updated the system BIOS to Insyde F. 31. The problem still persists.

6. I reset the laptop. Now the internal speakers screech even when the headphones are connected (the sound through the headphones is fine).

You're most welcome. 🙂

I suggest you to contact our HP phone support to explore the hardware service options for your laptop because the audio test failed.

It was a privilege to share this platform with you. Thanks again! 🙂

THIS TOTALLY WORKED!!!  I had a Probook 430 G3 i7 model and it was returned because it would make a hissing noise every 6 seconds from the speakers.  Removed AC adapter, removed battery, held power button down for 15 seconds.  Booted up into SILENCE!!!

The left front speaker of my HP Spectre x360 was emitting a loud static sound starting at boot up and continuing after Windows launched.  It would stop intermittently, but pick up whenever audio was directed to the speaker.  Headphones and external speakers all worked fine.  I was able to resolve the problem in a similar way as SuzukiSandy22.  I removed the AC adapter and held the power button for 30 seconds, then rebooted.  I did not have to remove the battery.

Hope this helps someone else!
