HP EliteBook 8740W
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

For some time I got the following message during startup:

1720-SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure (Failing Attribute: 5)

Please back up the contents of the hard drive and run HDD Self Test in F10 Setup.

F1=Continue F10 BIOS Setup.

For quite some time I started it up with F1 Continuous, but in the end I run de diagnotics of the Setup and run the test.

De System Diagnostics gave an error: Unknown failure.

Eventually on the HP support SIte I came across the solution to update the Bios of the notebook.

Bios Revision: 68CAD Ver.F0A

Bios Date: 11/25/2010

After a search for 68CAD I came upon a list of multiple Service Packs. Eventually the Bios Update from Windows 7 run (not USB Stick) to download via SP48625 and installed it. During installation I got to hear/see that the update was an outdated version which was compared to the installed version (present) of of date: 04/28/2010.

However, continued and installed it and afterwards it remained my PC hang with a black screen and no hardware responds, in short no start up options from USB, DVD/CD, screen is black and no HP logo or something like that.

Using one of the other Service pack, namely SP51149 I joined the following text at the tab ' Fixes '.

- Fixes an intermittent issue where the system stops responding (hangs) with a black screen during startup when booting to a Microsoft Windows Operating System.

This is according to me the problem.

Is my notebook become permanently damaged or worthless?

How can I fix this problem???
