hp pavilion dv7 7020ec
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello HP community,

my laptop HP pavilion dv7 7020ec had recently some serious problems, so I decided to reinstall it.

After hours of trying I got stucked to the point, where i choose disc for install OS, bu"t it says that   "it was unable to create or find partition disc". Also it says that " it maybe doesn´t support launching, so I should check BIOS for disk controller "(translating from Czech).

I would be grateful for every answer because I feel fatigued after trying to follow many guides from forums.

Hi @IvanTheGiant,

Yes, that is possible, but it is not support by HP. You may search on those tech forums. Here is one for example: http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-install-windows-7-to-usb-external-hard-drive-must-read/

Also, you can contact local repair store or HP phone support to consult the repair fee. If you want to contact HP phone support:

Please use the following link http://www.hp.com/contacthp to create a case for your issue, and contact HP. If you live outside the US/Canada, please click the link http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-phone-assist.html to get the contact information for your region.

In addition, I heard something that installing Windows XP at first would help to install Windows 7. Is it possible or I should try something different?

Hi @IvanTheGiant,

Thank you for posting at HP Forums! I have read your post and wanted to help.

I understand that you were trying to perform a system recovery on your laptop but failed.

Were you trying to perform a system recovery from the recovery discs? If so, did you create the recovery discs from the laptop or obtained it from HP?

If you still keep the recovery partition on your hard drive, you can also try the factory reset from the recovery partition.

Here are 2 documents may help:

HP PCs - Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 7)

HP PCs - Troubleshooting HP System Recovery Problems (Windows 7)

Let me know if they helped.

If this helps you to reach a solution, please click the "Accept as Solution" button down below in this message. If you wish to say "thanks" for my effort to help, click the "thumbs up" to give me Kudos. :catvery-happy:

I appreciate that you replied to me :cathappy: .

I also tried to use System recovery, but the problem is that the data in hard drive are gone and the only possibility is, in my opinion, installing windows again.

If there is any chance to use system recovery, it would be grateful :).

And again, thanks for replying, made me feel happy :cathappy: .

 Hi @IvanTheGiant,

Thank you for the reply. If you do not have the recovery media, you can review this link:

HP PCs - Obtaining HP Recovery Discs or an HP USB Recovery Drive

Also, it is better to perform hard tests to make sure there is no problem with your hard drive and other hardware devices:

HP Notebook PCs - Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 7, Vista)

Let me know if you need further assistance.

So I made Hard Drive test and I got error 303 on quick test and 305 on full test.

Is that error so important or I can still reinstall my pc?

By the way I dont have any System recovery cd or flash disk...

Hi @IvanTheGiant,

You got error with the hard drive test. Re-installation of Windows will not resolve the problem if it is hardware issue. You may consider a hardware repair of replacement.

And do you think, that I can use external hard drive for installing Windows? Replacing hard drive would be too expensive for me as student.
