I had to have a new hard drive installed ( after just two years). Now I am trying to install the operating system from the recovery CDs. I have tried accessing the boot options by pressing F9, F10, and F2. Every time it just says "selected boot image does not authenticate." What could this mean?

Hi @Rose30,
Great response and super quick too. 🙂 Thanks for replying. If you've tried a different keyboard, then the problem could be with either the recovery media or the DV drive.
You will need to order a different set of recovery media and check again. Please contact HP phone support by visiting this link: http://hp.com/contacthp
If this does not work, then the alternate option would be to try with an external USB optical drive if you could get hold of one.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂 Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you.
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂
Take care now and have a splendid week ahead. 🙂

Hi @Rose30
Welcome to the HP Forums!
Thank you for posting your query in this forum, it's a great place to find answers.
I understand that you are having issues performing the system recovery on your computer.
I’d love to help!
Follow the steps to perform recovery on your computer.
Recommended Precautions for Running a System Recovery:
- Back up your personal data (All files in the system will be erased during the system recovery)
- Only power cord attached during the system recovery. (If other devices (printers, cameras, Ethernet cable for internet connection, audio speakers’ cable, and dual display setup) are connected during the system recovery, the system recovery process may stop and fail)
- The link below will provide you with the step-by-step instructions on how to perform a system recovery on your computer.

Note: System Recovery usually takes 1 – 2 hours to complete.
Post recovery please make sure all updates are done and completed before starting to use your PC
Let me know how it goes! Looking forward to your reply.
Take care. Cheers!

Thank you for this information. However, no matter what button I push (escape, F11, F10, F3, etc.), the message is still the same (select boot image did not authenticate) when I try to boot from the DVD drive to try to reinstall the recovery discs.

Hi @Rose30,
I reviewed the post and thanks for the quick response. I understand that you are not able to perform the recovery because of the error message.
Please perform a hard reset first from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01684768
Then keep tapping the "ESC" key several times gently, as soon as you power up the computer. You could keep tapping on the "ESC" key and then power up the computer if required. Please continue tapping several times even after powering it on.
It takes you to the startup menu. Here press F9 to go the advanced boot options. insert the first disk in the drive and close the tray. Please wait for 20 seconds till the drive is read. Navigate using arrow keys and select the option that says CD/DVD drive boot option.
Then please tap enter and the computer restarts. It will start reading disk 1 and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process. If this does not work, it is possible that the keyboard may not be responding. Please try the same steps with an external keyboard.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂 Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you.

Thank you. We have tried all this. However, I am still unable to get the computer to boot from the CD drive. No matter what buttons we push to try to boot from the cd drive to reinstall the recovery discs, we get the same message, "select boot image did not authenticate. Please press enter to continue." But when we press "enter," nothing happens.

I ordered new recovery media and I was able to make a lot more progress. The operating system reinstalled this time. However, there is something peculiar happening. The keyboard doesn't work. The only letter on the keyboard that works is the letter 'm'. Thank you.

Thank you for the update,
I appreciate your time and efforts,
I understand that everything apart from the letter "m" on the keyboard is working fine,
The best way to identify the issue is to check on the Command prompt or by connecting an alternate keyboard to the computer,
If it works using the other keyboard, it's a hardware failure, however, if it works on the command prompt you may need to check the regional/language settings and change it to U.S or your respective region (click here for details)
Let me know how that pans out,
