that password apparently works...BUT....
After entering the pwd i get a messsage that says:
BOOTMGR is compressed
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
after pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, the darn thing goes back to asking for a pwd.
Any advice other than i have new boat anchor?

Hi,
You're probably going to need recovery media to reinstall the OS, but I'd run a check on the hard drive first, just to make sure there's no problem there - you can do this as follows.
Shut down the notebook. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu. Select the Bios option ( f10 ) and under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run test(s) on the Hard Drive.
Regarding recovery media, HP won't have the option to order this any longer, but if you're in the US, you could try the 3rd party re-seller on the link below.

Hi,
Unfortunately, unless HP provided recovery media on a usb flash drive, a lot of these machines required a usb optical drive to be connected in order to reload the os from a disc.
