[GUIDE] Update AMD Mobility Radeon drivers to fix graphics issues

[ Edited ]

I made this small guide because some topics on this forum are about this problem and there is no official step-by-step solution from HP.

So, how to fix your laptop's graphics issues by updating drivers for AMD Mobility Radeon HD GPU to latest version from AMD?

1. Install latest BIOS for your laptop from HP.

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Display-and-Video/Official-HP-statement-on-Switchable-Graphics...

2. In BIOS set Switchable Graphics Mode to 'Fixed mode'.

3. Install latest graphics driver for your laptop from HP.

http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-drivers.html

4. In Catalyst Control Center make sure that active GPU is 'High-performance GPU'.

5. Download latest version of Mobility Radeon drivers for your operating system from AMD.

For now, I recommend version 12.6:

- for Windows 7 64-bit:

http://www2.ati.com/DRIVERS/mobile/12-6_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc.exe

- for Windows 7 32-bit:

http://www2.ati.com/DRIVERS/mobile/12-6_mobility_vista_win7_32_dd_ccc.exe

6. Install AMD driver on top of HP driver. This installation will update AMD components to latest version.

7. Enjoy graphics performance as if it was properly supported by HP.

Solution for HP:

Release new driver each time AMD makes a new release within 1 week maximum. Hard? But this guy does nearly the same. Alone and for free. http://leshcatlabs.net/

OR simply ask AMD to provide direct links to new drivers like in an example above (see point 5) and sticky these links with a step-by-step instruction on this forum.

Problem solved.

With kudos from Russia. Alexander.

P.S. Does this guide work?

Thanks man, but I would just like to point out (once again) that Pavilion g7 models have no fixed mode, Pavilion g7 have received no BIOS updates fixing this problem, and Pavilion g7 models have switchable graphics that doesn't work.

Re: [GUIDE] Update AMD Mobility Radeon drivers to fix graphics issues

Can you still follow next steps on Pavilion g7 to update driver? I am worried that driver setup can fail if Radeon is not an active GPU during installation. I hope dynamic mode works in most games or apps. Or is it worse?

Re: [GUIDE] Update AMD Mobility Radeon drivers to fix graphics issues

It's worse, it doesn't work at all (bar 2 selected games, so I've heard. Haven't seen it running on mine).

Whenever I tried to manually update the drivers I ended up with serious problems because ATI installers do not detect the better card (even if the Catalyst claims it's in use) so I end up installing the wrong drivers.

Pavilion g7 is a faulty series, I'm affraid. We can only use the integrated chip.

Re: [GUIDE] Update AMD Mobility Radeon drivers to fix graphics issues

That's bad. Did you try to assign exe-file with high-performance GPU as shown in this document http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c03048374 ? I think that before updating driver you need to assign driver setup file to high-performance GPU as well. But if you are saying that nothing works at all than shame on HP for not releasing BIOS update with fixed mode GPU setting for your laptop...

Re: [GUIDE] Update AMD Mobility Radeon drivers to fix graphics issues

Reverted links back to 12.3 because I had severe performance issues with latest version (12.4) in games Diablo III beta and Guild Wars 2 beta and rolled back to 12.3.

Re: [GUIDE] Update AMD Mobility Radeon drivers to fix graphics issues

Updated links in the guide to 12.6 version which was recently released by AMD.

In 12.6 AMD fixed GPU and memory clock bug which was introduced in 12.4 and they skipped (cancelled) 12.5 release completely.

So if you are using 12.3 or earlier version - I recommend to update straight to 12.6.

I just installed 12.6 on my dv6-6169er with 6770M GPU and it works fine. I will post here if I find any bugs or problems with this release.
