HP Announces OpenGL will NOT be supported by dv6 / dv7!

HP has officially announced that they will not support OpenGL on the dv6 or dv7.

In other words, they will not properly support the market of customers who this laptop is aimed for. By purchasing this laptop, you 100% risk a thousand plus dollars on something that:

1. Cannot optimally run Adobe Creative Suites

2. Cannot play Minecraft

3. Will not support all iD tech engine games including upcoming Rage

4. Will not support all older games built on OpenGL

5. Will not support MatLab and other drafting applications. (Reading this college CS majors!)

HP engineers really just need to resign. You don't even deserve your salary for overlooking something so basic. Software out there still use this graphics library and some of those programs are extremely popular. You are just DirectX trolls! Even then, people are reporting crashes.

Purchase a Sager NP5165 or NP8130 from a reseller. The graphics card actually work as advertised. They aren't changing or adding disclaimers to cover up something they missed. And more intelligent customer support.

Re: HP Announces OpenGL will NOT be supported by dv6 / dv7!

To add:

The official sticky states that some OpenGL content may not run. That is a complete lie because the correct statement should be the AMD Radeon 6770M cannot run ALL OpenGL software. Assigning the high performance mode to the executables doesn't work. The instructions are useless to use advanced users who this laptop was meant for. Only the garbage Intel IGP can use it which stinks with advanced software. Minecraft goes slow as a snail.

Once again, pay a $100 more and get something worth it. Try PowerNotebook and XoticPC.

Indeed, my computer is absolutely useless apparently.. good thing this poor college kid spent every dime he had on a computer to run engineering software for school that isn't supported, sweet thanks HP I appreciate it.

Re: HP Announces OpenGL will NOT be supported by dv6 / dv7!

I hope your discussion with HP was honest and true from their end, lachycharts. I have had run-around issues prior to my return of this notebook.

Jaredo, and other students who are making quite an investment, I think it just sucks. Hoodwinking students is just a shame. I remember I didn't have the luxury to switch laptops because I needed it and couldn't be without it.

If you are reading this, go with the Sager NP5165. It's about 200 more for similar specs, but longer labor warranty and better customer service. The GPU GT555M is not as good as the HP dv6tqe but it will support OpenGL. More importantly, it will support high performance as you define it in the profile and not randomly reset back to Intel IGP. Optimus is much more refined sotware versus BACON or PowerXpress though it has some glitches as well.
