I have a HP ProBook 650 and it will not boot up.

It says,

A system bios recovery has occurred

BIOS Recovery ( 500)

Then Bios recovery via local media

It goes though a secure bios recovery and then just reboots and keeps going through the same process over and over.

It will not recognize any function key or the windows and B key, just freezes the computer.

It will not boot to CD or USB.

The BIOS may be corrupted. Before completing the following steps, perform standard troubleshooting to rule out other causes.

If the issue persists, complete the following procedure:

1. Turn off the computer with a black screen.

2. Insert a USB drive into another computer, then download and install the appropriate SoftPaq:
HP Probook 650 :- sp70256.exe (43 MB)
http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5405142&swItemId=ob_142627_1&swEnvOid=405...

NOTE: A more recent version of this software may be available. Check for newer versions at http://www.hp.com/

3. Click OK.

4. Select Create a USB flash drive to update or recover the system BIOS on another HP Personal Computer , click Next , select the appropriate flash drive, click Next , then click Finish .

5. Insert the USB drive into the computer with the black screen,

6. Press and hold Windows Logo key+B, then press the power button.

7. Release the keys and power button when the screen's backlight flashes.

NOTE: The computer will automatically start the recovery process when powered on, but the screen will remain blank. A blinking Caps Lock LED indicates the process has started.

8. Restart the computer when the following message appears: A System BIOS Recovery has occurred.  BIOS Recovery (500)

Hi, I had the same issue with update BIOS on my HP ProBook 455 G1, after update BIOS I've got 500 error and laptop was just freeze.

I've resolved this issue using USB flash with BIOS files. I've written an article how to resolve 500 error and freezing of BIOS update step by step here.

Please if somebody will get the same issue use it - http://denieler.blogspot.com.es/2016/11/hp-probook-455-g1-error-and-freezing.html

Also, I think using this trick you can update BIOS on Linux\Ubuntu laptops
