I receive this error message on start-up:
HP Battery Alert
The system has detected the storage capacity of the battery stated below to be very low. For optimal performance, this battery may need to be replaced.
Primary (internal) Battery (601)
ENTER - Continue Startup

whats the difference between the internal battery and external battery? I have replaced the external battery with a new one but the message still displays

It would help to know your laptop model. But I would say the "internal" is the CMOS or Real Time Clock battery. That is why I ask your model because it is unusual to see one of those die in less than 5 years. The model of the laptop would also allow us to show you how to replace the internal battery. It can be quite a job although the little battery (like a hearing aid battery) is very inexpensive usually.

I am having the same problem. I have a HP G61-304NR Notebook.
I get that same notification at start up that the internal battery needs to be replaced. How do I replace the internal battery, and what is involved in that?

I have the same battery error for my Hp EliteBook 8530w, which was bought in august 2009. The laptop is still has guaranty till next year. The ironic thing is that this error started appearing when HP announced that it will change batteries for free for certain series, except this one. How strange is that? The error appears before OS startup.
People, what would you advise me to do? Is there anyway that I can get my battery changed without having to support the costs? Where can I file an official complaint ?

internal error 601 - 99% times means main battery is used or defected. Sometimes it says about RTC battery on system boasrd - but if U'r bios and system clock arn't reseting each time U power on laptop its fine.
Try Battery check aplication from HP website to see battery condition and consider replacing it.
Remember that most time HP batterys are 1 year warranty.
