Pavilion g7 Black Screen on start up

I have a HP Pavilion g7 that the screen stays black on start up.  I cannot get it to do anything. I hear the fan running and the power button is lit up, but that's it.  How do I diagnose what is wrong. I just purchased this yesterday.

Hi,

 

If you've only just purchased this machine, my best advice would be to take it straight back to the retailer and get it replaced - you really shouldn't have to be troubleshooting a brand new machine.

Hi Shannon,

 

Try a Hard Reset as follows.

 

Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery, plug in the AC Adapter and start the notebook.

 

If you still get no display on the screen, try connecting it to an external display and see if this shows a video output.

I tried both suggestions. I still have the same black screen nothing is any different.

Hi Shannon,

 

Given that you have no video output on either the notebooks' or an external display, this would pretty much indicate a fault on the Motherboard - quite possibly with the video chip.  My best advice would be to take the machine to a local computer repair shop to get a proper diagnosis and estimate for the cost of repair.
