G62-445DX

Hello,

I accidentally dropped my laptop from the chair and the hard drive is kaput. I purchased a new one and inslated it. I then attempted to reset the laptop to factory setting using the recovery CD that I created 6 months ago just in case. However, I get to about 22% and I receive "Error Code 0xe0ef000e." I have no idea what to do next. Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Damir1

Hi @Damir1,

Welcome to the HP forums! It is a great way to engage, post questions and find resolutions by working with specialists in the HP community. I understand that your unit was dropped some time back and the replaced hard drive throws up an error code “0xe0ef000e.” while performing recovery from the disks that you have created.

It could be a possible hardware issue because of the drop or the master boot record of the HDD is corrupted because the recovery media is not installing correctly. For better clarity, I would require more information regarding this. Please let me know the product#  and the operating system of the unit.

However, I found a great response on HP forums authored by Dunidar a certified HP forum expert which is an accepted solution as well. I will share the link with you. Please check that out as well.

I request you to order the recovery media from HP support site.

I will share the link with you. Link: http://hp.com/drivers

You need to select the country and the language first. Then type the product number of the unit. Select the operating system of the unit and go to the download drivers page. Here there’s an option to order recovery media online. This should ideally resolve the issue if it is not hardware related. The recovery media can be ordered only for US and Canada customers. However, you could also  order it by contacting phone support by visiting this link: http://hp.com/contacthp

You could also run diagnostics on your computer by following these steps.

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every second.

The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu is displayed.

Please run the complete system diagnostics for the hard drive, memory and run the component tests also.

Please keep me informed and o let me know how this goes.To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up"  button to appreciate my efforts. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution”. If you require further assistance let me know and I will gladly do all I can to help.

Take care and have a great week ahead.

For me it was damaged RAM. I could install Windows 7 32bit but not 64bit. That was my first clue. Changed the RAM and the Recovery CDs worked.

Unfortunately HP only allows one set of recovery DVD media to be created, and it appears that the chances of one of the DVDs having an unreadable file is high, and unfortunately their media creation software apparently does not verify the media after writing, so you may be in for an unpleasant surprise when you actually need to use the recovery media to rebuild your hard drive.

Error code 0xe0ef000e apparently indicates that a file on the recovery DVD is unreadable. Would be nice if HP provided such an explanation.

In my case, one file was unreadable on recovery DVD #3, "11NA3ARW60387.wim". I was able to determine this by copying the entire DVD to a temporary folder on my hard drive. That file was unreadable. I was also unable to copy that file alone by repeatedly selecting and copying it on my HP Touchsmart 320 PC. Fortunately in my case I was able to read this file using a DVD drive on another (non-HP) computer, and was then able to burn a new recovery DVD #3 (on a non-HP computer) which had no errors. I was then able to restart and complete the recovery on my HP Touchsmart 320 with no errors.

I suggest that you test your recovery DVDs after you create them by attempting to select and copy the entire DVD to a temporary folder on your hard drive. If a file is unreadable make note of the file name displayed and click "skip" to continue, and see whether there are any other unreadable files. Once you have a list of the unreadable files, attempt to obtain these missing files one of 2 ways:

1) Try copying these specific files from the DVD to your hard drive on a different computer having a different DVD. I have found that the DVD on my HP often is not capable of reading files that other drives CAN read.

2) If that does not work, if you still have the original hard drive containining the HP_RECOVERY partition, go into the "preload" folder on that partition. Unfortunately HP prevents users on an HP computer from seeing the contents of that folder, but I have found that if you remove that hard drive and temporarily connect it to an unused SATA port on another non-HP PC the folder CAN be accessed (I did so on an older Windows XP machine which had an unused SATA port). I was able to see recovery files and copy any which I needed to a USB stick or something, then generate a new recovery DVD in which all files were readable on my HP PC's DVD drive.

After you have good copies of the files which were unreadable, put all the files in a temporary folder somewhere and use them to generate a new recovery DVD keeping the same volume name as the original (I used 3rd party DVD writing software to create the replacement DVD).

Remember to delete any temporary copies of DVDs used in doing the read test from your hard drive.
