Please help.

Hello @frescafresca
Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting.
Based on Microsoft representative/employee, this issue could have occurred due to these reasons:
1. Windows Update installation (files) was not complete or corrupt
2. Corrupt Windows Update Components.
It might also be a biggy Windows update.
The solutions is:
- either try System Restore to restore back to previous point
- use a system image (your own copy) to restore back before the issue started
- reinstall Windows (reimage the PC or perform HP Recovery)
Based on your description, you already tried System Restore and it failed.
I can assume you do not have your own system image created recently
So, your only option left is to reinstall Windows. This might be time consuming to complete pre-action and post-action but is the only option left now.
- Just to be 100% sure, please test your PC for hardware issues (F2 option) - details here > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JXUp43ahHA
Let me know the test results.
- Can you post your full HP product model and product number (PN) >> here is how to find it > https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00033108
- Did your PC come with Windows preinstalled - Win 8.1 preinstalled ?

I'm doing the System Extensive Test (2.5 hours) as I'd already tried the quick test and 'passed' everything.
Do you know what operation 50374 is?
Thank you again for any help you can provide- IIT is much appreciated!

Hello @frescafresca
Thank you for the details provided.
In order to reinstall Windows 8.1 and restore the PC, you need to use this recovery media - this is the one for your PC model >> http://www.computersurgeons.com/p-23494-windows-81-64-bit-usb-recovery-kit-785699-001-for-hp-noteboo...
Should be 1 USB pendrive which includes Windows, drivers, preinstalled apps.
Once you receive the USB device, you need to boot from it and follow the instructions to reinstall Windows > http://hp.dezide.com/ts/start.jsp?guide=HPSystemRecovery.net&as=true§ion=ccweb&SFS=tdoc&language...
There might be one more way to perform the recovery (F11) option but not sure it will work if you have been upgraded to W10 already, so try the above steps.
With regards to your question - what 50374 is - can't tell specifically but this is one of the many operations Windows does in attemp to update itself - including updating registry entries and system files. And it fails for some reasons - it seem software one related to faulty update or buggy one, or some 3rd party interference.

Here are some tips you can follow to avoid such issues in future (after you perform the recovery):
- disable Automatic updates in Windows. Instead, update your PC manually once every 3 months and do it at the end of the month, not in the beginning. Microsoft releases new updates usually the second tuesday of the month. Hopefully, if there is some buggy one and if found it will be fixed by the end of the month.
- use reputable AV program and one known not to mess with 3rd parties a lot
- invest in an external hard disk drive (external USB HDD) if you do not have one yet. Do yourself a favour and create system images of your entire system at least once per month. These are complete mirror copies of your entire internal PC hard disk drive - they contain everything you have on your PC including Windows, programs, drivers, your personal apps and programs - everything. Available using 3rd party programs or Windows built-in features and is free (only the external HDD is paid once). Here is more info:
>> option two >> https://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/8956-system-image-create-windows-8-a.html
If you have such an image, you can easily and fast restore your PC to the very same condition it was at the date/time of system image creation. In such a even of software failure or internal HDD corruption, just use the latest image or previous one and you will be back in the game for 15-30 minutes max with all your files and programs.

If I use the computer surgeon link to restore/ recover, will I lose all my files, photos, etc? I can't get in to save anything before recovering.
Hey,
YES, you will lose all your files currently stored on the hard disk drive as the recovery media will format your existing driver, therefore erasing everything. However, you can save/back-up your files prior to the recovery procedure. There are 2 ways to do it:
-1- open the PC and get the HDD out. Buy a cable SATA 2.5 inches to USB similar to this one >here< and plug in the HDD to another PC. Copy/paste all your info like you are reading USB pen drive
or
-2- boot from a live disc and read all your files. Copy them to another drive.
You will need :
- either 1 empty/blank USB thumb drive OR 1 empty/blank DVD disk
- Linux based operating system - free to download - e.g. Ubuntu or Linux Mint
You can directly download Ubuntu Desktop from Ubuntu's web site:
Download the x64 ISO > https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop
Once ready, you need to write the ISO to make a bootable media (e.g. bootable DVD or USB drive). Here is how:
* How to create bootable ISO on USB device >> http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows
or
* How to write ISO to DVD >> http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/burn-a-dvd-on-windows
When ready with the USB drive or with the DVD:
* Ensure Secure Boot is disabled (if applicable for your model)
* Ensure Legacy mode is enabled (if applicable for your model)
* Save the UEFI/BIOS changes.
(if applicable for your model) Details>> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03653226
Eventually, please, shutdown the computer using the power button.
Insert the Ubuntu USB thumdrive or the Ubuntu DVD prepared previously
Power on the PC.
As soon as you press the power-on button, keep hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).
This should open a HP Startup Menu
Choose F9 to open Boot options. Select the thumb drive or the DVD as boot option.
Follow the on-screen instructions to run Ubuntu (not install it but try it).
Ubuntu should load. You can try to see if it will be able to mount your existing HDD. If possible, you may be able to browse your files and copy what is necessary to a online Cloud storage service or to another USB device.
Hope this helps. Provide your feedback and let me know how it goes.

Hi IT_WinSec, Trawling through various other pages' info via my phone, I saw HP Recovery offers an option during the recovery process to save files. I proceeded in that direction, not wanting to spend $27. at computer surgeon if not necessary, and once at that Windows screen, I thought I'd try 'refresh'. IT WORKED! I lost a few apps like Chrome and McAfee but it was easy enough to redownload them and I am now back in business.
Thank you very much for your suggestions, especially re: setting updates to manual and installing on the last day of the month. I am also going to make frequent restore snapshots in case something like this happens again.
Best regards IT_WinSec.

I am happy you solved your problem and you are back in business. Be careful with these Windows updates.
Do not hesitate to post again in the HP forum.
Cheers ! 🙂
