Hi community.
After making a mess of a previous factory reset atempt and wiping the the HP recovery drive and tools drive I have obtained a recovery stick from HP (F9A59AV#UUF) and I am teriffied of messing everything up again so I am asking for help before going any further.
I have inserted the drive and it opens in Windows file explorer and ran 8.1 setup, checked for updates but could only get as far as"windows has failed to determine supported install choices" setup failed.
What do I do next please?

Hi @AlwaysLearning2,
Welcome to the HP forums! It is a great way to engage, post questions and find resolutions by working with specialists in the HP community. I understand that you need assistance to perform a factory reset from the recovery media that you ordered from HP. It’ll be a genuine pleasure to assist you with this.
A commendable job was done by attempting to perform a recovery and performing basic troubleshooting steps before posting your question in the HP forums. It is always a great pleasure to work with tech-savvy and technically sound customers like you. Kudos to you for that. I am amazed at your technical skills and levels of technical knowledge.
Please perform a hard reset first. Steps to do it:
- Power down the computer and unplug the charger. Then remove the battery only if it is a removable one.
- Hold down the power button of the unit for 15 seconds to discharge static electrical charges inside the machine.
- Replace the battery and reconnect the charger.
Insert the recovery media (USB Drive, CD/DVD) and then turn off the computer. Turn on the computer and immediately press the Esc (escape) key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Startup Menu opens. Use the up or down arrow key to select the CD/DVD drive or USB drive, and then press Enter.
Please visit this link to perform a recovery selecting the correct option relating to your situation. Link: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04758961#AbT4
I genuinely hope the factory reset completes without hassles and your computer is up and running quickly. Thanks for being a part of the HP community. Please let me know if this helps, and if it does, please mark this post as an “Accepted Solution”. Kudos would also be appreciated greatly for my efforts to help. Hi David and thank you for your kind words. Not that tech savvy otherwise I would not make so many mistakes. But I do learn from my mistakes and i enjoy learning.
Now, I have tryed your suggestions and read the link but so far no joy.
The computer is an HP pro 620 and I bought it nearly new but it had been used and upgraded to windows10 pro so I decided to do a reset using the windows settings option and that is where I lost the data on the recovery and tools partitions.
Now that I have the HP recovery stick I thought everything would be easy but as the planets are no alighned things are not going as smoothly as I thought.
These are the steps I have taken.
Inserted the usb and hit esc repeatedly as suggested (that used to get me into the BIOS screen) but now it only appears briefly and reverts backto black screen with the message:
" No operating system found etc.............Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart" so I cannot get into the startup menue as you incicated. On my previous attempt when I wiped everything I was at least able to reaload Win 10 from a stick using BIOS but not this time.
I have dissconected the power and left the computer on tho empty the battery (no removable) I am awaiting your reply. Probably the wrong thing but I can easly charge it up again can't I?
I do not want to do anything else till I get further clear direction as i don't want to make thing worse.
Waiting to hear from you with keen antisipation.
Best regards,
John

Please do a hard reset first.
Then insert the USB Flash drive.

Here press the F9 key to go to One time Advanced boot options and select the appropriate boot option. In your case the USB option.

Sorry to such a pain but I am having no luck at all.
Firstly I gave you the wrong model.
It is an HP Pro x2 612 G1 tablet.
I did as instructed and drained the battery, and static elect. inserted the stick and restarted the computer.
Pressing the ESC. key flashed up the BIOS start screen for a fraction of a second then quickly reverted to the black screen with thwewords:
" No operating system found etc.............Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart" with a flashing curser which means I assume thaat I may be able to enter a command of some sort. Perhaps not.
Anyway Pressing the F10 key gets me into the Setup screen but this does not seem to be of much help.
I am at a complete loss
While in the Setup screen I noticed an option to update the BIOS version. The current version was dated (and i am working from memory) was something like 01.01.80 with an uptated version 05/30/2016 so I decided to try an update '
I have "enabling network for remote access" but this has not changed for more that an hour or more so i don't know if this is working either. I am connected to the internet.
Thanks,
John

Hi @AlwaysLearning2,
I greatly appreciate your quick reply. I was away on my weekend and hence could not reply to your post immediately. Do a hard reset first as described in my earlier post. Disable the network boot option in bios. Please look for a USB option in bios and make it the first boot option. Then please try to run the recovery after that and let me know how that goes. I truly hope the computer issue is fixed without hassles and it begins to work great.
Thanks for being a part of the HP community. Please let me know if this helps, and if it does, please mark this post as an “Accepted Solution”. Kudos would also be appreciated greatly for my efforts to help. You could simply click the “Thumbs Up” Button.
