HP 15-d020dx TouchSmart NB
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am quite new at dealing with my hard drive crashing and having nothing that I can use for recover.  I ordered a new drive and when got the new drive that was sent, it was a Seagate  50000C5009E17DE89   ST500LM021 PN: 1KJ52-034 instead of the WD5000LPVX that was original one.  I installed it and followed directions that I found on the internet.  I am getting the following message  "Boot Device Not Found. Please install an operating system on your hard disk."   It almost appears that it is looking for the original drive and does not recognize the new one.  I do not have any type of boot or recovery disk for my "HP Model 15 D020DX" and the Seagate Drive.   I have some experience with computers but not at this level.

Someone had mentioned contacting HP about a load disk or boot disk or something like that but do I ask for the Seagate or my HP15 laptop or both , for what operating system (8 or 10) and where do I ask for this?    All help is greatly appreciated, being that I am at a loss when it come to making this happen.

New hard drives do not come with an OS installed-it is blank. Your laptop is not looking for original hard drive-it is looking for Windows files to boot from.

Your laptop had software on it to create Recovery Media to use to reinstall OS. If you did not do that you will have to order from HP. Order Recovery Media for Windows 8 . It will auto upgrade to Windows 10 later if you previously updated.

Order Recovery Media here:

http://support.hp.com/us-en/mediaorder/hp-15-d000-touchsmart-notebook-pc-series/6627588/model/678768...

You will need serial number to order Recovery Media:

So are you saying that thepoor guy cannot simply buy a copy of Windows 10 and install it himself?!

OR- use the free download from MS for Windows 10. You do not need a license key if it has previously been installed and activated:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/software-download/windows10

This method means you will not have the extra software installed using Recovery Media. If there was software you found helpful this may not be best choice.

@samames He was asking how to get Recovery Discs. That is why I offered that info. He admits not being very advanced in dealing with this type problem and HP media would likely be easiest method. However- No he doesn't need to buy a Windows 10 dvd if he took advantage of the upgrade offer. MS offers it free. Directions above in case you ever need them too.
