When I enter the product key supplied by HP the following message appears
The product key you entered appears to be for software pre-installed by the device manufacturer. Please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options.
So where to from here?

It appears that the OS that you are trying to install on the PC is a non standard Windows 7 OS.
You may need to install the OS from a HP Recovery Disc.
If you did not make a recovery disc at the time of the first few days of use, then you may need to call HP tech support and Buy a new one.

Hi:
If you are located in the USA/Canada, call HP at this number to order a set of recovery disks for your notebook...
Have the serial number of the PC handy to give to the customer services rep... 1-800-334-5144
Alternatively...
This site claims to have genuine, unadulterated W7 ISO files for download...
https://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/67-microsoft-windows-iso-download-tool
Click on the link labeled Windows ISO Downloader.exe
You can use either the:
Win 7 Home/Pro SP1 (as applicable to the product key) or the (Retail version, but the OEM key on your PC's case will work with it)
Win 7 Home/Pro SP1 (as applicable to the product key) COEM (This version would be for what HP would have used--System Builder)
N is for European Union (EU) countries.
K is for South Korean markets.
Then you can use this tool to transfer the file to a 4 GB USB flash drive or a DVD.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool
Then go to your notebook's support page to install the drivers and available software for it.
