HP Pavilion X2 - 10-n123dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Got a message that there was an upgrade to my BIOS from HP. I upgraded the BIOS (I assume correctly) and restarted the computer. It comes up to the login screen, however does not take my usual login. I was using the Numbers for login (Pin code) but the login screen does not give that option since the BIOS upgrade. I assumed it reset the passcode to my Microsoft passcode, however that does not work. I went into my Microsoft account and changed my passcode thinking that would solve the problem, alas it did not.

I contacted HP support and they are no help bouncing it from hardware to a software issue and want to charge me for getting the computer running again.

Any help would be appreciated.

Bob

Ok been playing around with this thing and it now working. I'm not sure what changed. I changed the router and was doing some other things and had to reclog in to the router and tried it again just for kicks. It took the password and came up. I have 3 other computers that were running on the other router and they all logged in correctly.

I'm not sure that had anything to do with it. I put the old router back in and it works with that also. The lap top never indicated it did not have a connection or was not connected to my router. I have checked that problem several times and even changed it from a 5K to A 2.5 K link. It never gave any indications that there was a problem.

I have no Idea what the problem was or why it's running now, but it is.

Thank all of you for the help. Someone at HP may want to look into the way this compter works in a recovery mode. It never worked for me and the attached keyboard is wortless to interupt the startup.

Hi @Bob0a,

A commendable job of troubleshooting, terrific description and a smart analysis of the issue was done before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂 You are a valued HP customer and I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this.

Did you try to reset the operating system without losing data?

Did you try to roll back the bios?

For a start, please try these steps from this link to roll back the bios: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833

 Please try both these options.

  • Recovering the notebook BIOS using a key press combination
  • Recovering the notebook BIOS using an external storage device.
  • Then check again if it works.

If this does not work, please try a system reset to on windows 10 without losing data from this link: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04758961 and check the option “Getting started” which actually gives an option for “windows System Reset” which refreshes the PC and reinstalls the Operating System without data loss. This should do the trick for you.

Please keep me posted. I will keep a watch for your reply.

Hope this helps.  Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂  Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂

OK Tried the reset of the BIOS to an earlier date. Did not work. This computer is designed to act like a Tablet with a removable key board and it looks like the BIOS does not scan the attached Keyboard until the system starts loading the operating system. Once that starts, it loads to the windows login screen. Neither Windows (key) B nor V got me anywhere.

I decided to try using a USB keyboard instead of the attached one in hopes the BIOS would scan the USB ports before loading the operating system and could use it that way. Alas I tried first a Logitech keyboard that used a Logitech connecter and that did not work. Then I dug through my closet to find a USB wired keyboard. Hoping that would work, however that also failed.

A suggestion was made to reloading Windows would perhaps solve my problem. I don’t feel that would work as the area where the password is stored would not be affected.

Am I the only one having this problem?

PS can any F keys work on this HP computer. The USB keyboard has F Keys, but so far I can't find any that affect the startup.

Hello, @Bob0a

I see that you were interacting with @DavidSMP. I would like to jump in with a suggestion 🙂

System recovery is the last step to troubleshoot this issue. This option reformats the system drive (usually C:), reinstalls the original operating system and reinstalls all the original hardware drivers and software. All you save files will be lost and your computer will be formatted to the day you purchased the machine.

Go to http://hp.care/2d8t85o and follow the steps under "Recovery when Windows 10 does not start correctly" to perform the recovery.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Good luck 🙂

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I have tried the reinstall and have failed.

Following the instructions on the link you have given me I used a external keyboard and pressing the F 11 key I got to a screen that said" Bitlocker" I tried to follow the instructions, however the only keys working on the keyboard were the number keys. The code had letters in in and I can't seem to find a way to input numbers on either the attached keyboard or the USB keyboard I have to use.

On the sign screen it keeps refering to reset my password at "account.live.com/password/reset"

This page is blank when you go there.

I am at a loss what to do now. The computer does'nt seem to reconize any commands except the F 11 key (whitch is not on the computer keyboard that is attached)  and It willnot boot to a USB drive.
