After a windows update yesterday, closing the lid or manually selecting sleep causes the laptop to switch off instead. I'm not sure this is the right place for this but any help would be much appreciated!

I suggest going into Programs and Features and removing that specifc Windows Update.
Hopefully, that will return normal expected result of closing thew lid or manually selecting sleep.
