Laptop screen has just started going black when I need to plug the ac adapter in to charge, if I take it out screen goes back to normal. I have not downloaded anything new recently. I did download the free Windows 10 but that was months ago. Any help would be appreciated but please not too technical as I am no expert on computers.

Please check if the powerplan options are set properly.
More specific:
Is the brightness setting when plugged in on charger OK?
Also: If screen turns black, can you still use the hotkeys on keyboard to adjust brightness?

I understand that but the screen is black whilst charging and means you can't work on the laptop because you can't see it!! It has only just started to do this and I have never experienced this before with other laptops, it is ridiculous, is there nothing that can be done to stop it?

laptop is only 10 months old, once it is fully charged I can leave charger plugged in and work on the laptop, it is very strange and annoying, I know other people have had similar problem. Going to contact HP direct. Thanks for trying to help

Problem solved! Since my brightness controls work backwards since installing win 10, I set my power options backwards! That is, go to your advanced power plan settings and set screen brightness to lowest(slider left!) when plugged in. That took care of it. Finally....
