Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My friend made a mistake and let his laptop get worked on by someone that called saying they were from MS.

Needless to say, they totally screwed up his system. ( Was Windows 8.1 but had been upgraded to 10).

I am helping him to fix it and have deceided to do a factory reset, but it fails each time. Any type of restore or reset

fails. He does not have recovery media. Can I download Windows 8.1 or 10 from HP to reinstall Windows or do we need

to order DVD's to do this, and how do I order the DVD's. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Recovery ordering is on his driver/software page-last entry. If you are on a machine running Windows 10 it may auto set for Windows 10. If so change the oS to Windows 8.1 to see the correct list.

You could skip restoring with Recovery Media and go straight to Windows 10 by creating install dvd or usb flash using the free download from MS. No license key needed since it has previously been activated on the laptop.
