I have recently been having a problem with my HP Envy. Before, if I was working on a word document or had a few mozilla tabs open, I could close the lid and walk away from it. When I would return, my documents would still be there. Now, anytime i close the lid everything I was working on is closed. I have the power settings set to sleep. I had it on "do nothing" when I close the lid and that kind of helped but it just runs down the battery.
Also, there have been multiple occasions where my laptop has restarted itself, when it's just sitting there open.

To be honest, with windows ten a new issue seems to appear with each update 😞
Would love to know if there's a solution to this.

Greetings @SibylC,
Welcome to HP Forums and Thanks for the post.
I understand that you are facing an issue with your notebook where all the applications close when you close the lid of your notebook. Happy to help.
Kudos to you for checking the power management settings.
Have you tried any other troubleshooting steps on your own?
Does the issue happen when the power cord is connected?
When you close the lid, does the notebook shut down?
Recommend you to make sure the BIOS and other drivers are updated using HP Support Assistant.
As you have not mentioned the product number of your computer, recommend you to download and install the graphics driver from the AMD, Nvidia or Intel based on the graphics card installed on your computer.
If the issue persists, please open command prompt as administrator and type the following command "powercfg –restoredefaultschemes" and hit enter.
Also, run the troubleshooter available in the control panel.
a) Write Troubleshooting in the search box and hit enter.
b) Click on Troubleshooting tab.
c) Click on view all option on the upper left corner.
d) Select the Power options from the list.
e) Click Next to run the Troubleshooter.
For other troubleshooting steps, please refer to this Microsoft forums post.
Let me know if this helped.
If the information I've provided was helpful,
Please give us some reinforcement by clicking the "Accepted Solution" and "Kudos" buttons,

Good Luck.

I did everything you suggested and it didn't help.
My computer will restart itself as soon as the lid is closed, when it's plugged in and when it isn't. It's getting to be very frustrating; I'm a student and if I'm in class I can't afford my laptop to restart itself if I have to close it for a few minutes.

Sorry, but Windows 10 has a nasty habit of resetting the configuration settings when Windows Updates get applied, and since we can't prevent those in Win10, this happens to us without notice.
Your battery is likely running down because Win10 enables FastStartup by default, and this is a new hibernation option that will use power even when you have shut down your PC.
So, my suggestion would be to disable that ...
There are two ways to disable FastStartup in Win8/10; (1) through the Control Panel, and (2) through an elevated command prompt.
Control Panel - Open Control Panel --> Power Options.
Select "Choose what the power buttons do"
Select "Change settings that are currently unavailable"
At the bottom of the Window, under Shutdown settings, uncheck the box regarding fast startup
Elevated command prompt - run the following command:
REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Power" /V HiberbootEnabled /T REG_dWORD /D 0 /F
In both cases, reboot Windows.
NOW, FastStartup is disabled.
Hopefully, that will help with the battery drain problem.
