HP have released a non-working bios update utility for ProBook 4730s (though this problem seems to arise in other contexts as well) which gives you the error "there are no valid dos system files at the specified location" when trying to create a bootable usb key.

The problem is that the installer refers to FreeDOS\KERNEL.SYS under the installer root folder e.g.  C:\SWSetup\SP75859 that does not exist.

This folder can be found in an earlier bios update utility pack e.g. http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5060894&swItemId=ob_121864_1&swEnvOid=405... that you can download and run, which will extract  files to the folder C:\SWSetup\sp62122 from where you can copy the FreeDos folder to C:\SWSetup\SP75859 from where it is missing.

After this the bootable usb key creation succeeds by running the FirmwareUpdate.exe application.
