How can I get my laptop working again when I have this system fail?? Please
so I hit enter - to continue to startup.....and end up with a constant "preparing automatic repair".
Any ideas what to do now?

Sounds like the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will replace it. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use your HP Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

You can get a new hard drive for around $60-$80. Depending on which model you have it may be easy to replace it following the Maintenance Guide online. If it is one of the more difficult models and you aren't comfortable with it it may cost around $150 for the drive & replacing it.
