HP 15 notebook PC J9H18UA
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (32-bit)

It started with a message from Opera that a threat was discovered with a translation extension from Opera. They killed it but it done its damage I suspect. When I loaded HP support a blank black screen flashed twice win 32 something. Then the battery wouldnt charge and the charge light flashes the orange light. Its white when I start up but as soon as Im on a browser it flashes orange. The battery test says cant connect and the screen check shows 2%.Now when I download something sometimes it goes on to desktop instead of coucuments or download.I am using another computer to send this as I dont trust the other right now.

My research indicates corrupt bios?I dont know if its the intel chip or the AMD.If I download the bios program from HP and run it will this fix the problem?what size is the download?will I be better off to put it on a stick rather than download directly to the infected machine? What about downloading thru my other computer and then into the infected one?will I loose all my data?I have no way of backing it up for 3 weeks until I get back to the city from a camp way out in the bush on a satellite system.

Also whats a good antivirus?Defender didnt work in this case and McAfie it slipped by on their free use one. When I called them basically they said not their problem.Forget Norton I got screwed by them and TotalAV is a joke

Microsoft wants $500 for some guy ina call center to fix the problem over the phone.I can buy another comtputer for that.HP said my warranty is expired but I have extended warranty thru staples. They said go there.Staples want the machine for 2 weeks to send somewhere. Not an option for me right now.Any suggestions or help appreciated.

Hi @offgriduser,

Thanks for the post and Welcome to HP Forums,

I understand that you are facing issues with your computer's battery and performance, is that right? Happy to help.

Kudos to you for trying to troubleshoot the issue on your own and running a battery test?

May I know the procedure you used to run a battery test?

Recommend you to run HP Support Assistant to make sure all the drivers on your computer is updated, including BIOS. Click here for assistance.

Once all the drivers are updated, please run a system test on your notebook by tapping F2 or ESC on startup to enter the system diagnostics mode. Click here to know more.

Once the computer test passes, follow the procedure mentioned in this article to improve the performance of your computer and clean up your computer.

Windows defender is a good protection tool. However, if you are not happy with it, you can install any anti-virus of your choice.

Please do not click on any ads that claim to clean your computer or prompt any issues on your computer. They could be spyware or malware, click here to learn how to prevent resolve such issues.

Let me know if this helped.

I did the assistant thing and when I clicked on for updates the wheel would just spin with the circles and I had it going for several hours and no change.I did find out I have the 64bit not the 24 and its an AMD.On some other site from HP helper or something it showed no updates. The battery test with the assistant shows 2% and that there was a problem. No other info was provided.I also found out that windows defender is disabled thru a program from HPbut my security is all OK and good through out for firewalls and stuff.McAfie is on again. It loaded itself on some how.And it checks everything out as good and on and wroking. But the orange light still flashes and not charging battery.

Thanks for the reply and trying the suggested steps. Recommend you to uninstall the battery controller following the procedure mentioned below.

Shut down the computer.

Remove the battery from the computer.

Turn the computer ON with only the power cord connected.

Once the computer reaches the desktop.

Open device manager by doing a right-click on the Windows button.

Uninstall the battery controllers (you might see multiple of them listed.)

Delete the driver when prompted during uninstallation of the driver.

Restart the computer couple times.

Shutdown the computer and insert the battery and turn the computer on.

For the procedure to uninstall the battery, click here. (The article is for Vista, but the procedure is the same for Windows 10.)

Now open HP Support Assistant and run a test on the battery.

If the test fails, please contact our phone support for the service options.

Let me know how it goes.

If the information I've provided was helpful,
