Hello @keithreed
Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting.
Probably you purchased the PC as a second hand model/refurbished.
In such cases and for security reasons it is recommended that you do NOT use the operating system that was present on the PC. Instead, you need to format the entire hard disk drive and reinstall Windows (or another operating system) from scratch. Therefore, you will install/type your own password during the operating system installation process. The Windows that is currently installed might be corrupted/compromized/infected because you never know who and how it was used before.
This PC specs support officially Windows XP, Windows Vista (both officially not supported anymore) and may probably also run Windows 7. Additionally, any modern Linux-based OS should also run fine (Ubuntu, Linux Mint).
Let me know if you have further questions.
