Embarrassingly, I've had my g7 notebook for several years and never created a recovery disc. It's now time to disassemble the unit for cleaning from dust build up. I thought this would be good time to finally create the recovery set, however, I keep getting a "disc verify failed" message on the first disc. I'm using Memorex DVD's and have tried both +R and -R discs

3 times each. My system was upgraded to Windows 10 from 8.1, automatically from a scheduled download. I

My question is, If i create a recovery disc now, will it keep the current OS or revert back to 8.1 and  can I use my backed up files for a system recovery if something happens during the cleaning?

1- In my experiences Memorex is one of the absolute worst for creating Recovery Media. Sony and Verbatim are 2 I have used with success on numerous machines.

2-Many times the Recovery partition/files are corrupted by Windows 10 upgrade. Not always but often. It is always best to create the Recovery Media before upgrading.

3-Will Recovery be of windows 8.1 or 10? I am really unsure of this one. Are you using HP Recovery Manager to create the media? If so and it succeeds it should be windows 8.1. You will be prompted to upgrade again after restoring 8.1. At least in my case it was so.

4-You should be able to use the Recovery to restore Windows-as long as there is no physical damage during the cleaning.

If you already have a recovery backup of os, you can use that backup to re-install the os. If it is win8.1, your computer will be turned to win8.1 from win10. You can update it again.
