Pavilion dv6
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Truefully, playing with it as it had been replaced. Everything seemed to be fine. Restored to factory defaults more than once and was feeling comfortable that unit was stable. Next prepared to transfer personal files and windows would not load. Tried system repair disk, a complete failure, then in BIOS restore defaults, again no luck, eventually was able to access system restore at bootup-ESC. Restore process slow, ran system diagnostics Hard Drive Test and received

Failure ID: RGAM53-5MN8HN-MFH15G-60UU03.

The hard drive has failed/is failing and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

  1. Appreciate your reply. It certainly corresponds with other views but been messing with this laptop (kind of an exercise in learning) and Short DST test is now showing PASSED. The biggest problem I'm having now is with the display. Sometime during the process of updating software (Windows Updates & Drivers) the display will change to a much larger view or 'font'. Eventually, I am successful returning it to normal using system restore but it happens so often it is taking a toll on me. Is this common? Is there an easy fix? It would seem to be a driver but I'm guessing. Your help could save my sanity. lol

Get your full Model number or Product number from the Service Tag attached to bottom of laptop (may be under battery)

Once you have the info, use the button at top of this page titled "Support", then click "Software and Drivers" from the menu. On the next page enter your Model Number. After entering  click 'Find my product' button. On the next page be sure correct OS is selected-if not Edit to change.A list will populate with drivers/software. Check for latest graphics driver.

I still suspect the hard drive is questionable. You haven't mentioned having made Recovery Discs. Personally, I would make them even though you mention the laptop has been replaced and you are only playing with it. Without them If that hdd goes the fun will be over. 🙂
