HP and Lexmark are two different companies.
Any way, when a printer is not recognized:
1. first you check to see if there is a icon with red or yellow mark in device manager, this means windows did find a device, but just didn't recognize it. You need to contact the manufacture to see if the printer is compatible or supported by your OS.
2. if there is no such icon in device manager (for the device connected), then the OS didn't detect any new device, this could be either the device is not turned on, or the cable is not connected right, or could be a bad cable. Check with your manufacture or user/install manual on how to connect, may be use a different cable.
I am an HP employee.

Hi,
In XP:
Go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Devices Manager
If You have there any yellow signs then click with right button of Your mouse on each of them and choose properties. Then go to bottom details and paste here device id. This way we will know what it is.
About this printer. There isn't such a thing like lexmark HP printer. Find any sticker on his printer and You will know what it is.
