Editing Quick launch buttons on XP

Hi all

I have succesfully (with help from the other posts on this forum) installed Windows XP on my Pavillion Tx1000.  I'm so happy to have left behind the numerous annoyances of Vista for the not-perfect-but-much-better XP Pro.  It took about 4 or 5 hours to do, and I swapped in a new HD to install it on (so I could go straight back if it didn't work) which I'd definitely recommend others to do.  I even got the touchscreen working.  :-)

Anyway...  most of the Quick Launch buttons work fine (volume, play/pause etc), but the 4 around the screen edge (DVD, sort of circular arrow, sort of cog wheel and the rotate screen button) don't do anything.  Is it possible to edit what programs they call?  Some of the literature on the HP website suggests it should be possible to edit them using a program in the control panel, but I don't seem to have anything there.

I installed .net 3.5 SP1, but not until I'd already installed SP39425.exe (Quick Launch software version 6.40.6.1 F).  I reran that program after installing .net, but still nothing in the control panel.  Should I be looking elsewhere?  Or is there another way to edit what the buttons do?  I notice there are some action DLLs in the Quick Launch Buttons program folder, but I'm not sure I have the ability to edit DLLs!

Many thanks

Nick

Re: Editing Quick launch buttons on XP

Are you sure you are identifying the right problem?  While if your computer was purchased with Vista, it also came with QuickPlay/DVD.  Your XP copy (most likely) did not include it.  You WON'T find it on the HP Site either.  Refer to http://forums13.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do?threadId=1287312 and you need Version 2.3 for XP.  Also, you won't get the Quickplay direct boot feature to work either ... well at least NOT with MY help.  The buttons SHOULD start Quickplay or the DVD player function IF the system is active.  They will merely wakeup a sleeping/hibernating/shutdown system.

If you REALLY want to edit them, (I THINK) they are assigned (mapped?) in your Quick Launch Driver directory in the file 'setup.ini', HOWEVER I have NO documentation and you are on your own and free to experiment.

I've no real desire to use Quickplay. But I would like to put the buttons to good use, launching Windows Media Player, e-mail or whatever. There doesn't seem to be much in the setup.ini (think these are just what-to-copy-where files for the installer) nor, incidentally, in QLB.inf in the program folder. This description, from the program download page, seems to suggest a GUI for editing options, and I've seen references in other forums to people using it (to change button press sounds, mainly): "This package contains the software that enables the Quick Launch Buttons on the keyboard and the external Easy Access Buttons Keyboard to be programmed for the supported notebook models and operating systems. This application enables menu control of various bezel buttons such as volume, internal/external display, and mute on/off; HotKeys, and Docked Events." Maybe there were different versions of Quick Launch... Thanks for your reply anyway. Nick

See if you have this file and it helps you at all... I didn't read it in any detail however...

Re: Editing Quick launch buttons on XP

Nope, no help files (or folder). I did a bit of digging, and BezlACTN.dll contains paths to various programs, including QuickPlay, Itunes and Windows Media Player, so I suspect the actions are contained in there or one of the .exes. I also found a forum post elsewhere that suggested that the ability to edit the button actions was removed when HP updated the software to fix the security hole discovered a couple of years ago. Ah well. Everything else is working perfectly, and I never used the buttons before, so I'm no worse off. Thanks for your replies anyway. Nick
