H P Mini 311 XP install problem

I am installing a version of XP on my H P mini 311 off of a USB flash drive.  I have used the flash drive on other computers that I have and it works just fine.  The problem is when the XP install gets past the initial driver loading and then is searching for somewhere to put the new install, it does not see my Hard drive.  The manufactuer support was basically worthless, I am asking here before I try to create a new streamline with all the drivers form the H P already in the install.

Thanks,

Nosut

Re: H P Mini 311 XP install problem

I too am looking to install my own XP Pro operating system but I am having trouble finding the correct drivers and a usb floppy drive that works. I have also not been able to make the disaster recovery or my Norton Ghost work (other than from the restore disk you either purchase or get free from HP) which made me look into loading my own operating system on it. I know the problem is the sata hard drive and I can't believe they designed it to be so restrictive. There is a setting in my Toshiba that I change which makes the drive compatible. No problem installing anything to the Toshiba. Has anyone done this using a USB floppy? Done meaning: yes I have done it and it works - not yes, this should work.  If so, any assistance is welcomed.

Re: H P Mini 311 XP install problem

hi guys,

01) HP Mini 311 is the series what is the model number you guys using?

HP Mini 311 points me towards, Nvidia Chipset motherboard.

Nvidia chipset does not need SATA drivers to see H.D.D like Intel & AMD chipsets need.

02) even if it does, download Nvidia chipset driver from HP.com, search by your model number

03) Installing XP via USB flash drive never works...

Boot frm pendrive when you see a menu asking Press r to start in repair mode

then press r to start in recovery console

Xcopy all I386 folder to c:\i386

then from recovery console type

cd\

c:\

cd i386

winnt.exe

to start installing windows XP from H.D.D

reply

Regards,

EverWin

Re: H P Mini 311 XP install problem

Unless you have the HP Mini 311-1000NR in your hands,  you won't get to experience the way it works and doesn't work. So, that being said, you cannot install XP from the Windows install cd without the sata driver.  And that's my final answer!

Last night I was able to install XP Pro on my HP Mini 311-1000NR. I used Driver Magician (found free on line) to identify all the existing drivers on the netbook and save them. I then used Nlite (found free on line) to slipstream just the sata driver into the XP Pro install CD. I tried slipstreaming all the drivers but it didn't work - the new install cd wouldn't continue the install. Just make sure you have the sata driver  .inf file highlighted before hitting next. I then used CDBurner XP (found free on line) to burn the cd from the .iso file that Nlite creates. I did all this on a different laptop after I copied the drivers to a flashdrive. I used the instructions found at this link as a guideline. http://news.softpedia.com/news/Install-Windows-XP-On-SATA-Without-a-Floppy-F6-47

Like I mentioned, I just slipstreamed the sata driver and not the entire group. I installed the remainder of the drivers after XP Pro was up and running. That was the only way I could get it to work - maybe the 3AM time frame had something to do with it.

I was also able to partition the hard drive they way I wanted. I even installed Norton Ghost 14, made a backup image file, restored it and it worked just fine. I did save the image to the second hard drive partition and I haven't tested it on an external hard drive yet. Not sure if this will work since it didn't work with the factory software installed on the netbook.

The HP netbook with XP Pro seems to work great and I am totally happy now that I have a system that I can backup and restore when there's a problem. Plus all that junk and trial software that comes with it is gone.

OK I have a 311-1000NR and did exactly this (can't run winnt.exe) had to use winnt32.exe

system blue screens with 0x0000007B error as soon as the install starts looking for the HD.

I have tried slipstreaming drivers onto disk and it still blue screens at the same point.

BOT is not working the restore point is broken and it has only one choice for a restore and it doesnt take it back to original factory state.

I realy need to get xp installed on this system, otherwise i have a $400 paperweight.

I have xp home oem disks and a removable CD/DVD usb drive.

Any help would be great

Thanks

Bill

Re: H P Mini 311 XP install problem

Thanks Rakhmad

As soon as I dig my car out of the snow I will go to work and try this driver.

I will report back if it works.

Another issue I had when making a nlite disk is I got a error making a cd, but a dvd burned.

the drivers i added only added 36meg so it wasn't the size.

I added all the nvidia drivers.

I will try "Just' the sata ide driver and see how it goes.

I am using SP2 oem disk. Any links on how to add SP3 to my slipstream?

I have looked but haven't found a clear answer.

Thanks again

Re: H P Mini 311 XP install problem

Here for XP-SP3 download.

Use Nlite only for SATA driver, too many drivers would raise other issue.

I can feel about your snow issue, been there, and thankful not having this trouble anymore.

Re: H P Mini 311 XP install problem

I am sure you are right about needing the sata drivers.  I too get the 0x0000007d error after the XP Pro install copies the files to the HD and reboots.

Where do I get the sata drivers?
