Hi,
I have a laptop Compaq 6715b, s/n CNU8151J1Z which runs Windows XP. When it boots up it goes in a loop, saying that Windows did not start successfully and giving me 5 options - Safe mode, Safe mode with networking, Start Windows normally etc. I have tried Safe Mode, Start Windows Normally and Last Known Good Configuration, but then it goes back to the beginning and displays the same 5 options.
I have rebooted from the Operating System CD supplied with the laptop, went to Diagnostics - Startup Check. It checks the memory, then it does HDD Self Test and I get the message :
Status - Failed - Replace Hard Disc 1.
Warranty ID 51J1Z -0000-23007-CNU81-10008-01
It looks pretty hopeless, but what is your advise anyway?
Regards
Milen Mirov

Hi, Milen:
My advise is to replace the hard drive.
If you need data off of it, get an external SATA to USB notebook hard drive enclosure, plug it into another PC, and see if it can read the contents.
If it can, you will be able to copy your files off of it.

Hello madrockster. I understand you've gotten the message that your hard drive has failed.
This means that you will need to replace your hard drive. You will want to take a look at the section 4-8 of your notebook's Maintenance and Service Guide. This section covers how to disassemble your notebook to replace the hard drive. It also contains the part numbers if you'd like to locate that exact hard drive.
I hope this is helpful. Have a great day!
