I've just attempted to burn my recovery discs,
currently stalled after burning disc 1 of 3 with the message
"Re-insert the disc you have just written and close the tray"
Did that an hour ago. Nothing new since. Looks the same as this problem:
Machine is a Presario CQ61, OS is vista home premium.

I too am encountering this issue exactly as described above. I have a HP dv7 laptop with Vista Home Premium.
The recovery manager does not proceed passed the creation of disc 1.
Any help here?

Apparently this is a known issue that HP has yet to publish. According to the support rep I just chatted with, there are three brands of DVDs that are incompatible with their recovery manager for unexplained reasons:
Memorex (My first purchase as they are sold everywhere, are very affordable, and I have never had a problem with them before)
TDK (Also ubiquitous in the marketplace and very reliable with other burning applications)
Vadora (Never heard of these before he mentioned them)
He DID assure me that Maxell DVD+R discs will work. I will be making a third trip to the store this evening apparently, to spend another $20 on DVDs simply because HP couldn't put a single sentence warning that their software is incompatible with three widely available brands of DVD+R media.
Interesting side note... when I explained that I had already bought two spindles of discs and was reluctant to spend more money on a third, (their recommended solution), they refused to send me a set of recovery discs until I had purchased and tried the Maxell discs. NOTE TO Jimi Hernandez at HP Customer Support: Basic customer service etiquette dictates that when your company withholds information that causes the customer to make two trips to the store spending $15 - $20 a trip, you should probably just cough up the recovery discs that literally cost you pennies to produce.

Here's the transcript of my conversation with Mr. Hernandez at HP Support regarding this issue in case you are interested:
Thank you for contacting HP Chat. If you need further assistance, please visit our website or contact us again via Chat or E-mail.
David Knight : Recover Manager won't burn 3rd disc.
[An agent will be with you shortly.]
[You are now chatting with Jimi Hernandez .]
Jimi Hernandez : Welcome to HP Total Care. Please give me a few moments while I review your problem description details.
NOTE: For security reasons, PLEASE DO NOT send credit card information via chat.
David Knight : Hello. I am trying to create the three recovery DVDs prior to upgrading this system to Windows 7.
Jimi Hernandez : How are you doing today David?
David Knight : I've been better.
Jimi Hernandez : As I understand you want to know how to create recovery disc correct?
David Knight : No
David Knight : I know how to do it, the system just fails to create a third disc.
David Knight : I thought the problem might be the Memorex DVD+R discs I was using so I went out and bought TDK DVD+R discs and the problem is still occurring.
Jimi Hernandez : May I know the error message please?
David Knight : There is no actual error message, but the Recovery Manager ejects the disc after burning it and then says Re-insert the disc you have just written and close the drive tray.
David Knight : Below that it says To continue, cick Next.
Jimi Hernandez : Is this the first time your trying to create?
David Knight : I re-insert the disc, but Next never becomes available. The Next button remains grayed out.
David Knight : Not sure what you mean by the 'First time'...
Jimi Hernandez : Have you created before?
David Knight : No recovery discs have been created on this system before
David Knight : I have tried multiple times this evening, creating unusable discs every time it gets to this same point in the process.
Jimi Hernandez : Please give me a minute here.
David Knight : Ok
David Knight : I found this very similar issue on your support site but instead of it happening on disc 1 it happens on disc 3. http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Operating-systems-and
Jimi Hernandez : I just checked the information and it seems that Memorex ,TDK ,vadora this 3 types disc wont work.
Jimi Hernandez : So you have to purchase something like hp disc or sony as such.
David Knight : Where is that published?
David Knight : And why wouldn't it state that clearly in the opening screen of the Recovery Manager if it is oddly incompatble with several commonly available brands of media?
David Knight : Will it work with Maxell?
Jimi Hernandez : Its not published but those disc dont support to create recovery discs
Jimi Hernandez : Yes it will work in Maxell.
David Knight : So the only way to find out is to waste a bunch of money buying multiple brands and then contacting you when they fail? Seriously?
Jimi Hernandez : Am sorry sir but the recovery wont work sometimes on those brands.
David Knight : Are those the only three brands that won't work? Can you give me a list of compatible brands?
Jimi Hernandez : It works sometimes and sometimes dont.
Jimi Hernandez : Apart from those 3 all will work
David Knight : So if I buy another brand and it doesn't work, what would be the next troubleshooting step?
Jimi Hernandez : If that step fails then you can get back to us and we will ship the new recovery disc to you.
David Knight : Since I have already spent $30 on discs I can't use because HP doesn't publish this known incompatibility anywhere, could you please send me the recovery disc now so I don't have to spend even more money?
Jimi Hernandez : By default you have to use the discs from your side
Jimi Hernandez : You need to try using it first if that fails then we can send you one.
Jimi Hernandez : I apologize for the inconvenian cause to you.
David Knight : I HAVE tried. I was not able to do so because your company failed to publish a known issue, costing me money. Can you please escalate this to get it approved to send me the discs so I don't have to spend more money to make this work.
Jimi Hernandez : The maxell brand will work.
Jimi Hernandez : You can purchase it and try because most of the customer who used it .
Jimi Hernandez : Iit worked.
Jimi Hernandez : The process of the recovery files will be much faster if you create it by yourself.
Jimi Hernandez : Are you with me?
Jimi Hernandez : Are you with me? Please respond as a delay may cause a disconnection in our chat session.

Latest release of recovery manager. So called improved stability. I have no idea whether it will work with your laptop.
