Portable
Model: Pavilion g6 Notebook PC
Product: QD317UA#ABC
Serial#: 5CG124144C
OS: Window 7 Home Premium Service Pack 164-bit
Product ID: 00359-OEM-8992687-00010
Unable to install Windows Updates (Failed Status); error 80071A90
No recent changes made to software or hardware.
Connection Method: Wireless Technical Expertise: Mid-level
Troubleshooting performed: since type error # 80071A90 was indicated by the system, I followed the instructions from Windows Help and Support, e.g. to run Microsoft Fix it which did not work; a more advanced method was also used, that recommended to start Windows Update in Safe Mode, then to open Windows Update and install Updates and finally to restart normally. The problem at this point was that there was no Windows Update Step available.

Check your hard drive for file corruption by running a check disk and run a full anti-virus scan to check for virus/adware/spyware that may be interfering with the update.

What are you backing up and what are you using to back it up with? Norton?
- Windows 7 64 bit has an feature to encrypt files in your my documents
- I would suggest you open the My documents and look for any files which the name is a green color as windows tends to mark the encrypted file names in green
- right click on it, click on properties > click on advance > see if encrypt file is checked, uncheck it > apply OK
- You have to do the same for all files in green font
- then restart the backup and let us know what happens
