my wife's laptop keeps freezing. Browsing web scrolling, then it locks up to the point holding down power (10 sec) to force it off. Cannot do the factory image restore some how the files were corrupted. So reformatted with ultimate disc , ever since had issues, runs updates using security essentials so i know the install was genuine windows. what do i do from here, shes mad and i cannot afford a new one

Hi,
Shut down the notebook. Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu. Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory. Post back with the details of any error messages.
If both the above tests pass, try the following.
From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'. In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, click Computer, left click Local Disc C once to highlight it, right click Local Disc C and select Properties. Click the Tools tab and then click the button to 'Check the Drive for Errors'. In the following window make sure both boxes are ticked and then click Start. Agree to schedule the check at the next system restart and then restart the notebook - this process can take several hours to complete before loading back into Windows.
Regards,
DP-K

Hi,
Try running the hardware diagnostics and check. You can follow the steps mentioned in the link below:
Let me know what happens. If the tests pass then post only the Product number of the notebook.
Do not post the serial number.

Yes it looks like the Hard Drive test failed and needs a replacement. If the system is still under warranty then you can call tech support and provide the Failure ID and they will be able to get it replaced for you.

lol ok, warranty is totally out of the question.
ran another hd self test (f10)
failed error code 303
I do not understand how one test could say its failing, but the chkdsk didnt pick up any bad sectors or any other errors that would suggest failure is immenent
Is there anything else i can do at this time other then replacing it. I have never had an issue like this, being through this hp 1 compaq 1 dell and my own acer. not to mention all the desktops laying around my house.

Yes..freezing issues are some of the symptoms of the hard drive going bad. Both tests are different. The first test is a quick test and the F2 tests are comprehensive tests which checks each and every sector in the hard drive.
Hard drives in notebooks are little delicate and sometimes go bad..nothing to worry much but yes you'll have to purchase a new one if the system is out of warranty.
You can get the spare part from the HP Parts Store online or call them directly @1-800-227-8164 [M-F 7:00am-7:00pm CST]
