Envy notebook
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I attempted to disable the pointing device (touch pad) on the keyboard since I'm using an external mouse and I often make the mouse move with my wrists leaning on the touch pad.

The first thing I disabled was the touch screen driver. I re-enabled that OK. But when I un-installed the driver for what was called the Synaptics touch pad, the touch pad remained operational. So I don't know what I un-installed, and I cannot get the system to recognize any new hardware with a hardware scan.

Was the Synaptics touch pad driver something extraneous that isn't used?

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

I think it is an HP ENVY - 17-s143cl and its product code is X0S43UA (zero), not XOS43UA (leter O as from your post). Its specs:

      http://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c05301038

Please download and install the following   Synaptics TouchPad Driver:

   http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp76501-77000/sp76782.exe

Regards.

BH,

Thanks for your time and prompt reply to my question.

To let you know what happened, I downloaded the driver you suggested and attempted to install it.  I received a message back that said that there was already a newer version of that driver loaded.

At that point, the touchpad was operational, but the second entry in the device manager still was not present.

In the device manager, I ran and re-ran the option to look for new hardware--no change. I then opened an HP troubleshooter and ran it. It came back and said that it found an issue and to do a restart--no explanation of what the issue w as.  After two restarts at HP's insistance, I checked the Device Manager, and found that the Synaptics SMBus TouchPad entry magically re-appeared.

Everything still works just fine. I'm pleased.

And I thank you for your time.

Happy New Year!

Lee
