Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Bought a new keyboard. Works on all other computers except this one. After several hours of troubleshooting USB ports and driver issues, the only thing I haven't tried is updating the BIOS.

This is the support page I've been referencing that I believe to represent my computer: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-ENVY-750-100-Desktop-PC-series/8499646/model/8501...

After going through my system information, I have discovered that my BIOS SSID ROM family is 2B36....The ROM families listed from HP are 2B2C, 2B47, and 2B52. I'm under the impression that I cannot update my 2B36 into a different family, and when I attempted it anyway, there was a confimation check of 'updating' the bios from A0.08 to 00.00, which I felt was incorrect, so I did not proceed.

I found that a small group from almost a year ago were also having a similar issue: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/750-150xt-bios-update-does-noth...

But a solution was never reached. Can anyone help me?

Hi @johnsmith123,

I read the super quick reply. thanks for the response. Please do this. The said version of your SSID Rom family is not listed. So let's try this out. Please launch HP support assistant. Then update it to its latest version.

Also, make sure to launch HPSA. (HP support assistant). Then try to update the bios from there. If there is an updated version, it will automatically download it and install it. Otherwise, you have the latest version of the bios installed on the computer.

Finally, The computer is perfect and there is nothing wrong with the USB ports. If this keyboard is new, please return this keyboard for a replacement fo a different brand and start using that if possible. Please do not update the bios as if HP support assistant does not do it for you.

Hi @johnsmith123,

A very warm welcome to the HP community. A very good day to you. Smiley Happy I understand that you require assistance regarding the USB keyboard that does not work on this computer while it works on other computers. It will be a delight to assist you here.

A commendable job of troubleshooting, terrific description and very smart analysis of the issue was done before posting. Kudos to you for that. Smiley Happy You are a valued HP customer and I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. Smiley Happy

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this.

  • Do other devices work correctly on the USB ports such as a flash drive, a USB mouse or USB printer or digital camera?
  • Did you check with any other USB keyboard to isolate the issue?

First off the bios updates that you refer to in the link are on version  00.00, and if you are seeing it that way, it is only a glitch. But the actual versions are::

HP Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update (ROM Family SSID 2B2C)
A0.11 Rev.A    14.7 MB    Jan 6, 2017    Download
HP's Terms of Use

HP Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update (ROM Family SSID 2B47)
A0.18 Rev.A    15.1 MB    Oct 20, 2016    Download
HP's Terms of Use
DetailsPrevious versions
HP Consumer Desktop PC BIOS Update (ROM Family SSID 2B52)
A0.13 Rev.A    6.0 MB    Oct 4, 2016    Download
HP's Terms of Use

You could safely update them without hassles. If another USB keyboard works except for this one, then it is one of those rare cases where this specific keyboard may not be compatible with the PC and is not getting detected considering that another USB keyboard works correctly on this PC. You could perform a bios defaults after the update and check again.

Please keep me posted. I will keep a watch for your reply. Smiley Happy

Hope this helps.  Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. Smiley Happy  Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. Smiley Happy

Thank you for the reply!

Everything seems to work with the USB ports. Other keyboards, external harddrives, mouses work on all of the ports. This new particular keyboard that only fails to work on this particular computer also generates 'USB Device Not Recognized. Device Descriptor Request Failed' error messages. Yet I've reinstalled drivers, updated drivers, disabled every unnecessary Windows 10 service that may cause the error, etc... The keyboard itself is plug and play and starts working in <2 seconds when inserted into any other device. It was also not "100% unresponsive all the time": Sometimes I could type a few keys before it would become unresponsive again. Typing tests of rapidly alternating keys to get "dfdfdfdfdfdfdfdf" would instead produce "dfdfdfdddd" for example, and then stop working altogether. Upon inspecting the device in control panel, there were event messages such as "failed migration", and "code 43" that led to even more troubleshooting that gave no results.

Regarding the BIOS updates.. so of these three versions you mentioned, which one is appropriate to download and update with? I thought I was supposed to only download one of the options that matched my ROM Family SSID of 2B36, which I couldn't find.  Or does the SSID not matter, and I only download the most recent BIOS update of Jan 6/2017 ?

Fixed it.

Noticed the computers the keyboard worked with were all laptops, came up with a theory that the keyboard was drawing too much power. Bought a 2.0 USB hub with its own power supply. Keyboard works perfectly now.

Thanks for the interactive help!
