I recieved my laptop as a present for doing well in exams. It came with Windows preinstalled onto it.
Now two years on, the laptop still works fine, until I got a virus on it. I had to do a full recovery to return it to normal. When doing so it asked for Windows installation media. As it was basically cleaning the whole laptop, it would need a copy of Windows to reinstall when returning back to its normal state. I gathered this from Microsoft's website on a USB with Windows 8.1 to be reinstalled.
Now that the laptop is fixed, it is prompting me to activate Windows that requires a serial code. As Windows was preinstalled I have no such code to use. I have contacted Microsoft about this issue and they sent me to HP to see if I could request the code.
Please can anyone advise me on how to do so as my laptop is not covered by HP support apparently. As a student, I need my laptop to be working in good condition so a solution would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks.

Hello;
Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!
Actually, you DO have the code -- as it is embedded into the UEFI firmware of the motherboard.
You can retrieve that code using this utility: http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/getmirror/windows_oem_product_key_tool,1.html
Good Luck
