Boot Device Not Found error - Only when I connect an HDMI cable to my Dell monitor. (I do this with this laptop in my other office and it works great).

"Please install an operating system on your hard drive."

F2 for Diagnositcs Hard Disk (3F0)

Go to hp.com/go/techcenter/pcdiags

As soon as I disconnect the HDMI and reboot everything is great again.

I have tried it with 2 diffeent HDMI cables (one that works fine in my other office and my HP monitor).

I really need to use a large monitor when working...any suggestions?  Thanks! - kelly

Welcome to the HP forums! It is a great way to engage, post questions and find resolutions by working with specialists in the HP community. I understand that the computer throws up an error message boot device not found when it is hooked up to an external monitor via HDMI. It will be a privilege to assist you.

A commendable job was done by doing extensive troubleshooting before posting the question in the HP forums. It is always a great pleasure to work with tech-savvy and technically sound customers like you. Kudos to you for that. I am amazed at your technical skills and definitely value your relationship with HP. We appreciate you greatly for doing business with HP and I take it a privilege to share this platform with you.

Please perform a hard reset to see if the computer fires up and changes things. Steps:

  • Power down the computer and unplug the charger. Then remove the battery only if it is a removable one.
  • Hold down the power button of the unit for 15 seconds to discharge static electrical charges inside the machine.
  • Replace the battery and reconnect the charger. Try to power on the computer.
  • Please perform a bios defaults also.

Then please check in the bios if the bios can be  extended to this monitor via a working HDMI cable.

Please check on another screen like a TV (not another monitor) with the computer booting to windows and the HDMI cable connected to the TV to isolate the issue further.

Please update the bios, chipset and graphic card drivers from this link http://hp.com/drivers

Please run the system diagnostics without the HDMi cable plugged in, only  if you've not done it  from the above-mentioned link 2. You could ignore link 2 if it has been done without the monitor plugged in.

I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and things work great. Hope this helps. Please let me know how this works.

I had already updated the bios.  I plugged in a TV with a straight HDMI cable. Works perfectly......My husband is now enjoying my new monitor with his PC.  Thanks for your help.  - Kelly
