HP 15-n237nr
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

i recently acquired my moms hp 15-n237nr laptop. it's a couple years old but never been used. it was not upgraded so it still has windows 8.1 64 bit. it will not hook up to wireless and i have tried everything i could find on the subject.  if i want to use the stupid thing it has to be connected to a wire.  i'm at the point of just giving it away cuz it is of no use to me...i already have a desktop..don't need another...  if anyone has some new suggestions to try, im willing to try it

thanks

Hi @NotLikingLaptop,

I reviewed the post comprehensively. If the notebook connects to another network correctly, then the notebook has no issues and the issue is with the router as it is not allowing the notebook to connect to this home router. This notebook needs permission to connect to your home network as the router could have  a built-in firewall that keeps away unwanted computers and hackers.

Brilliant effort, remarkable troubleshooting and spectacular analysis of the issue again. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

The router has mac filtering enabled that has a specific number of known devices connected to it. The notebook does not seem to be on this list and hence the router page has to be configured to add this notebook to that list and then the notebook should work fine with the router on the wireless network.

This is a security feature of the router to ward off unwanted computers and hackers. Please contact the IT technician who set up the router to get this done.

Try the notebook on a different network also. if it connects fine on a  second network other than the one you tried the first time, then the issue is not with the computer.

The other workaround would be is to get a USB wifi dongle and plug it to one of the USB ports of the computer and then connect to the wifi router. You should be able to order one for a song. It is cost effective as well to connect to the home network.

Trust me I've done all I can to assist you, by keeping your best interest in mind.:) I hope the computer works great and stays healthy for a long time.:)

Thanks for giving me the privilege to share this platform with you. you've been fabulous to work with. 🙂

Hi @NotLikingLaptop,

Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums! 🙂 Good day.  I read your post about wireless connection issues with your notebook. I will be delighted to assist you here. 🙂

Stupendous diagnosis and spectacular analysis of the issue before posting.  Kudos to you on that score. It is always a privilege to work with technical specialists like you. 🙂

We greatly value your relationship with HP. You are a valued HP customer and we appreciate you greatly for doing business with HP. I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂

First off, for better clarity and to assist you better, I would require more information regarding this:

  • Has it ever connected to a wireless network before?
  • Do other devices connect to the present Wi-Fi network now?
  • Have you tried the notebook on a different Wi-Fi network like a hotspot or a library network?

For now please try using the steps from these links to connect to a wifi network.

If this does not work check out this link.

If this does not work, then the issue could be a hardware issue with the wifi card.

The other workaround would be is to get a USB wifi dongle and plug it to one of the USB ports of the computer and then connect to the wifi router. You should be able to order one for a song. It is cost effective as well.

Hope this helps.  Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂  Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂

to answer your questions...  today i went to a known hotspot to see if the laptop would connect, it did.  so now i know the laptop CAN connect but it chooses not to connect to my home wifi.   this laptop is actually a couple years old but has never been used.  it came from my elderly mother who could not cope with the new operating system.  my point is, some sites have said the laptop or router could be too old and incompatible...not true.  i have used an older laptop that connects with no problem, as do all my kids and grand kids electronic devices.  this laptop is the only device that i am having problems with.  i have tried your first link and it did not help..now moving on to the second link.

thanks so much for your help..i'll let you know if anything works...
