Hi @

Sorry to hijack a thread but this question is the same that I had....and maybe the answer will help the OP too.

I installed via USB connection on my main computer, but now want to connect via Ethernet as well for all the other users in the house.

I followed the instruction link you provided - and according to that I need to re-run driver installation package. Is that correct? I would have thought I would be able to run the HP assistant etc and just change connection modes?

Please confirm that I need to re-install the drivers to enable Wireless / Wired ethernet connection. And if so do I re-run the driver pacakge on the same PC as the USB connection or some other PC in the house?

Thanks.

Hi @harryw66,

I reviewed the post comprehensively. Please follow the instructions to the "T" and that should do the trick for you.

I hope things pan out great. 🙂 Please keep me posted. However remember you cannot connect using wired Ethernet and have a wireless connection at the same time.

But you could have a USB connection and a wireless connection going simultaneously.

Hi,

Thanks - yes that worked - but it was weird having to re-install the driver just to change connection mode. Anyway - thanks.

I did the above on my main PC, but for the other PCs/Laptops in the house, I just went into Settings->Devices->Add Printer and Windows 10 automatically found the printer on the home network and installed a driver for it - I did not need to run the HP driver install package. Everything appears to work fine on these other PCs/Laptops - so just wanted to check I am not missing out on anything by using the standard Windows 10 drivers?

The users of these other PCs will not be doing anything administration etc just printing docs.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply and glad to hear that the printer is working fine now. The only thing that you would be missing by using the built-in driver is the printer utility which can help you monitor the ink levels and the diagnostics tools meant for the printer. You can manually download HP print and scan doctor or HP support assistant for this purpose, click here to know more.

I have not had a chance to try the wireless setup yet - too may other projects going on. But I've read over the instructions in the first link. In Step 1: Prepare for installation, item 3 says "Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cable from the printer." In Step 3: Download and install the printer software, item 2 says, "If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer." I do not see later any instruction to reconnect the printer to the computer. I definitely want to retain the USB connection between the computer and the printer. I want to always be able to print even if there are network problems. If the USB and wireless setups cannot coexist, then I will keep the USB connection and make the printer available to other computers on the network using the Windows Homegroup as I've done in the past with other printers. Please clarify.

Hi,

Once you re-run the driver install for the wireless setup and it all goes OK, I would then recommend you try and connect another printer in your homegroup wirelessly.

Once you have confirmed that the other PCs connect wirelessly, you can then re-attach the USB cable to your main PC.

In fact - from memory - I am pretty sure that as part of the driver install (for wireless) it asks you to re-attach the USB cable at  a later point, in order to transfer the Wifi settings from your PC to the Printer (I have Windows 10 - so it may be different on other OS). This meant that I did not have to re-enter my Wifi password for the printer during the wireless install.

When connecting other PCs to the printer - if you have Windows 10 - just try clicking the Add Printer / Scanner link from Settings->Devices and it should find the printer and add it to your PC - without having to install the HP driver manually. I did this and the two of the other devices I added have so far been printing sucessfully. Obviously you will miss out on some of the tools like Ink Level - but  you can still access these on your main PC or from your browser by entering the IP address of the printer in Chrome/IE etc.

Good luck.

Hi,

Sorry I though I should correct one of my comments above...

I said I was easily able to add the wireless printer to  my other PCs in the house by just doing a Add Printer in Windows 10.

However, I noticed last night that the driver that Windows automatically installed only offers Manual Duplex printing - no Automatic.

So, this morning I installed the official 'Basic' driver from the HP website http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-Color-LaserJet-Pro-M252-series/7089938/model/7089...

HP LaserJet Pro M252 Printer series PCL 6 Printer Driver

14.0.15309.432 68.7 MB Aug 25, 2016

I did the one above and it connected to the Wireless Printer and now when I select Printer settings it offers the automatic duplex (rather it does not show a Manual Duplex option). I did a print and it did double sided without any masnual intervention.

Hope this helps.
