Excuse me for intruding here but I have a question. Is linuxmint OK for laptops?  Linuxmint.com states the OS is for desktops. I am interested for future decisions on an alternative OS.

It says desktop but is meant as all system like desktops which also includes laptops because it's more or less a mobile version of a desktop. You can't install the desktop version on a tablet. However, you could install the desktop version on a Mac.

Yes, it's all in. I have got another HP laptop and Sabayon linux works just great. Vivaldi (can't stand Firefox and Chrome) as a browser, Kodi works even in the live environment and everything is just fine.

When you open the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file:

...

menuentry "Start Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon 64-bit" {
set gfxpayload=keep
linux /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/linuxmint.seed cdrom-detect/try-usb=true persistent noprompt floppy.allowed_drive_mask=0 ignore_uuid boot=casper iso-scan/filename=${iso_path} quiet splash--
initrd /casper/initrd.lz

..

it should look like

...

menuentry "Start Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon 64-bit" {
set gfxpayload=keep
linux /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/linuxmint.seed cdrom-detect/try-usb=true persistent noprompt floppy.allowed_drive_mask=0 ignore_uuid boot=casper iso-scan/filename=${iso_path} xdriver=vesa quiet splash--
initrd /casper/initrd.lz

..

or

...

menuentry "Start Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon 64-bit" {
set gfxpayload=keep
linux /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/linuxmint.seed cdrom-detect/try-usb=true persistent noprompt floppy.allowed_drive_mask=0 ignore_uuid boot=casper iso-scan/filename=${iso_path} nomodeset quiet splash--
initrd /casper/initrd.lz

...

No need for the "set" option.
