Hi guys,

I have had this happen for a while now and it's starting to annoy me, to start it up after it's been off for a while I must hold the power button for more than 5 seconds, anyone had this happen before? or anyone know how to fix it ?

Fixed it by pulling the CMOS battery out and making contact between the 2 terminals .. all good again .. :OpenSmile:

Hi,

The first thing that I would do would be to make sure you have all of your Windows and HP updates.  Especially the BIOS software.   When it does turn on, does everything work fine after that?  Your battery has a full charge and or the a/c adapter is plugged in when this happens.  If a software update does not fix the issue, it sounds possible that there may be a hardware issue with the actual power button.

 

The way to check your BIOS would be to click your 'Start" button.

Then in the search bar, type 'system'.  You should see 'system information' in the list above.  If it doesnt come up, then you can choose 'all programs', 'accessories', 'system tools', then 'system information'.

Click on it. and a window will open, and about half way down that window you will see 'BIOS version/date'  Out beside that you will see the version that says 'F.' something.  There will most likely have a number after it.  That will be the current version on your notebook.

Then you can go to this link, http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=2100&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=3989... , I show that the notebook came with windows vista 64 bit, but if you have upgraded it to windows 7 64 bit, you can just change the operating system option at the top and hit the 'next' button to refresh the list.

About half way down, you will see BIOS, click on it, there will be a drop down and you will have some options for the BIOS software.  I see that F.43 is the newest for vista 64 bit and windows 7 64 bit.

Click the 'HP notebook system BIOS update' and it will take you to a new page.

On that page, you will see the download button.  Click it and if it ask you to 'run or save', choose 'run'.

You may come to a 'insyde flash' screen, there will be a 'start' button at the bottom.  Click it and the update will install.

The BIOS update will either shut down or restart your notebook automatically once it finishes.  So you want to run this update by itself.

If it restarted, once it loads back to the desktop, go ahead and shut it down, then power it on to test and see if you can just hit the power button with out actually holding it down.

 

Try this and let us know what happens.

Thanks for the reply, system is all up to date, latest BIOS installed also. I don't think it's the power button because I have noticed it starts up as soon as I hit the power button - after I have shut it down and do not turn off the mains power, if I turn the mains power off after it shuts down and try to start it up I have to hold the power button for a long time.

But after the notebook is off, if you unplug the a/c adapter from the notebook then try to turn it on with just the battery power, it takes a few seconds for the notebook to power on?

Yep, powers up normally with just a quick touch of the power button.

Yes but it's also the same if I have plugged the power adapter back in or turned it on at the wall, not just while on the battery.
