HP Envy
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I  am using a HP Envy Notebook running Windows 10 Home Edition. (I have a 1.80 GHz processor, a 64-bit OS, and 8 GB of RAM also if that helps at all.)

My problem is that the fan is running constantly for apparently no reason.

I have had this problem since I bought the laptop in around October of 2016. I have already tried disabling the "fan always on" option in the BIOS, but when I went to disable it, it had already been disabled and it made no difference toggling it between enabled or disabled. My laptop is not warm, on an uneven surface, or in a warm environment most of the time when the fan is running. I have also checked Task Manager constantly and there are no programs except for Cortana that eat up my memory or CPU. Any suggestions for what to do about this?

Thanks,

- Charlotte

Hi @charlottew1,

Good Day.   Thank you for stopping by the HP forums. I reviewed the post regarding issues with the computer’s fan spinning constantly. I will be glad to assist you here. 🙂

Superb description and splendid diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

To assist you with clarity, I would require more information regarding this.

  • Does it make a loud noise?
  • Does the computer freeze at times while playing games or opening many tabs or watching videos?
  • Did you run diagnostics on the fan and other components?
  • Please let me know the complete model# of the computer.

For now please perform these steps

  • Please update the bios and chipset drivers from this link: http://hp.com/drivers please select the country and type the product# of the unit. Then please select the correct operating system and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Also please run component tests from this link: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03467259
  •  to check that the fan or any other component is not faulty. Please run the option “Running the UEFI Component Tests” just to eliminate hardware issues. If the fan spins without making any noise, it will normally always spin to dissipate heat inside the computer from the processor as it is designed that way.

Every time the computer is powered on, there is a thermal cooling system that comprises of the fan, heatsink and sometimes a liquid coolant that ensures that the fan spins at standard speeds to ensure that the processor does not overheat and gets damaged. This is a feature of the CPU fan.

Also, when playing high-end games or when a lot of the computer’s resources are used the fan kicks in to spins faster and louder than normal to still keep the temperature in the computer around the CPU at optimal and safe levels to protect the CPU from overheating.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, please. Please note that I am not overloading you with a lot of troubleshooting steps.

Instead, just like you, I am eager to ensure that the problem gets resolved. So I am providing you with more resources and information at your disposal to deal with the situation better.

Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care now and have a superb week ahead. 🙂
