Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Just upgraded windows 10 from 8.1 last night after finally getting my laptop running again (has broken 2 times with maybe a years worth of use) and now my touch pad isnt working. it was working fine all day and now it just stopped. ANd if i try to go into the advanced mouse options all it tells me is "control panel extension is incompatible with driver version" but accordeing to everywhere i see all drivers are up to date and doesnt even give me an option to update them.

Hello;

Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!

I read your post about sudden touchpad problems in Win10 and wanted to help.

Unfortunately, Win10 automatically forces driver updates on all of us, without our knowledge, and without our permission -- and when this happens, a working PC is suddenly "broken".  This might have happened to you.

You need to go into Settings, Update & Secirity --> Windows Update.

Then, choose Advanced Options --> History to see when updates were last applied.  If you see any that include device drivers, those could be the problem. So, iff you can, you should see if you can rollback the drivers that are causing the problem.  You do this by going into Device Manager, seeing if the WiFi adapter is still listed, and if so, trying to rollback the last driver update.

And if that fixes the problem, then consider disabling future driver updates using the information in the link:  http://www.howtogeek.com/223864/how-to-uninstall-and-block-updates-and-drivers-on-windows-10/

If that doesn't work, an alternative is something known as a Repair-Install.  This is the least destructive of all the Windows recovery functions and rewrites the Windows system files, leaving your data, settings, and applications intact.

To do this, you will need to use the link to download Win10 installation media and either burn a DVD or create a USB stick: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win10

Once you have that, follow the instructions in the link:  http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/16397-repair-install-windows-10-place-upgrade.html

After that, what some folks have reported is that, by going into the BIOS settings, under the Main tab, by changing the Advanced setting to Basic, their functionality returned.

If that is not the same for your BIOS settings, or if it does not work, you could try using touchpad drivers from Synaptic site: http://www.synaptics.com/en/drivers.php
Note the comment on the page to set a Restore Point before trying any of these drivers.

Good Luck

Thanks for the fast reply. I didnt even think about going into the history for the updates and when i did right at the botte of the list the update had failed for some reason. but when i went to the synaptics website and downloaded their driver it said i needed to restart before hand and i did again it it works! so i guess it just fixed itself. But now i have a couple ways to fix it if it ever happens again. Thanks!
